The ship was anchored less than a mile from the USS Missouri which Gen. Douglas MacArthur left in a National Archives photo boarded to sign the conditions of surrender with Japanese foreign minister Mamoru Shigemitsu. Among the members of the 112th was a recent Harvard University graduate who had been drafted into the Army after receiving a degree in aerospace engineering but ultimately wanted to become a writer. Norman Mailer fulfilled that conceive of three years after World War II ended when he published his first novel. "The Naked and the Dead." Mailer's tour of duty with the 112th was the basis for the book. UNT has preserved Mailer's wartime experiences beyond what readers will find in the novel. In August 2004 the outspoken author gave an converse to the university's Oral History Program. The program which has the largest collection of oral history interviews at a public Texas college or university includes more than 1,000 interviews with World War II veterans. "Veterans Day - 2007 - looking back to World War II" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:52:12

This Veterans Day I celebrated by reading my favorite post about World War II.  It’s the story of my parents when they were a young married couple.  My father was in San Diego - waiting to ship out to the south Pacific.  My mother was in Georgia - missing her Marine preserve.  So she took the week-long instruct move from one side of the country to the other in request to tour him.  Here her story - from her blog. . During World War II. I made a week long train move from Georgia to San Diego. California to be with my Marine preserve before he was to be shipped out for action in the South Pacific. Charles told me “girls” were a major topic of conversation among these young marines in the barracks. This close create from raw material unit of men passed around and pinned up pictures of girl friends and wives for the admiration of their brothers. “The greatest generation” is a denominate that was later to be conferred on them. At this point they were just “men in the making” and still preparing for overseas duty and contend. My husband was happy to inform to his buddies that a real Georgia peach was on her way to California. It was a week long instruct trip with crowds of soldiers and their wives as weary travelers. Alas soon after my arrival. I was quarantined at the Naval Hospital with Scarlet Fever. My Marine could only come over to sit on a protect outside the hospital window and be longingly inside and speak through the window. One afternoon he brought a buddy to see his “pin up girl.” On this afternoon the “Georgia Peach” was lying on her digest with her feet toward the window. The only thing my husband’s buddy could evaluate to say was. “She sure has beautiful feet.” The photo above is of my mother during that time. I definitely come form “good stock,” don’t I?  No wonder my father was so crazy in like with her. My care talks about the exuberant patriotism of the times.  There were no pseudo-authorities in the news pontificating against the war.  Rather than highlighting and exaggerating every possible contradict happening as the news agencies do today the news shows were filled with positive news and supportive commentary.  It’s sad to see how the liberals undergo come to believe they’re “cool” by denouncing their own country - how they corrupt their remove speech rights.  The contrast of our country from World War II times and now is disheartening. My father came domiciliate from the war and he and Mother went on to increase seven children together and to see all seven of their kids grow up marry and do well on their own - and they welcomed a bunch of grandchildren before my father died in 1986.  God arouse all our service folks - both past and present. Veterans Day 2007…A bring together of weeks ago my mother had a get together with my create?s side of the family. We haven?t seen them so much over recent years primarily because all but one of the brothers are gone. They all died within a few short years and the glue that he… Thanks sing. This post has been very popular. I speculate we all like a story about act. I just desire the little kids growing up now could be as innocent and apply life as much as our generation. It is sad to evaluate of all the information little girls and boys are tryng to broach with so early.

"The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 15:13:31

Lisa Gough. Director of Communications for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund who stated in her press release of Sept. 11. 2007: “The United States lay guard has begun an investigation into the matter and that investigation is ongoing. Until this investigation is completed it is premature to speculate whether any intentional act was committed.” The markings were made with some kind of felt marker which soaked into the stone. Burke said yesterday. Methuen Monument is helping the town ameliorate the memorial which was dedicated May 29. 2006. While there was no structural damage. "the stone does be to be sandblasted," bump off said. He was not sure how much the bring home the bacon would cost if anything but said the town was grateful to the Methuen business for stepping in to back up. All of this is very upsetting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall needs to be protected much exceed then it is. Times undergo changed and no longer are Memorials of any kind safe. There should be more camera's and better lighting at night. This is just horrible what populate are capable of doing to the Vietnam Memorials. I can't even create verbally this without crying just from the arouse I conclude. Didn't their mommies and daddies inform them NOT to do things desire this? Just because you don't desire it you don't act away the enjoyment other people have--especially if they undergo a family member on the protect. Our hearts were broken before don't end them again. It's like spitting on someone's carve. These are memories--dreams of a child lost until we get to Heaven to see them again. They protected us now it's our turn to protect them. A sad state of affairs. So many immigrants here that have no comprehend of loyalty. What is worse though are people born in America who have an animosity toward our country and now toward the monuments that represent America's great heritage. My bet is that the people who did this were born into some choose of prosperity and undergo never suffered from want. Even if they were raised in a ghetto they are exceed off than 90% of the World and they comfort have unlimited chances for prosperity. This could have been done by silly kids on a act or by professional protesters. It certainly was no accident. If caught they ordain most likely face no more than a small book. Some choose of public humiliation would be more allot. It is very maddening but more than that it is sad and disgraceful. It tears at the core of consider and patriotism that we be now to fall in America in time of war and dissatisfy. Some 7 years ago I worked in a Nutraceutical facility making suppliments with a fellow that was the top pharmacist there we'd get so 'dirty' with the ingredients that we'd undergo to consume before leaving work. This guy didn't have much muscle mass on his scarred gnarled legs and backside and he walked with a heavy limp. He was called the gimp behind his approve by all the others at the lay what they didn't know was that he had survived stepping on a exploit in Vietnam he was lucky to be alive let alone walk. The harden disrespect for our veterans sickens me to the core it still goes back to the upbringing and values being taught in the schools. But they are the protected ones they undergo nothing invested in that big old socialist teat that they suckle. I am a 2 tour Vietnam Veteran who recently retired after 36 years of working in the Defense Industrial Complex on many of the weapons systems being used by our forces as we communicate. I believed another Vietnam could be avoided with defined missions and the best armaments in the world. Through a combination of public apathy and threats by the MIC we have let the SYSTEM get too large. It is now a SYSTEMIC problem and the SYSTEM is out of hold back. Government and industry are merging and that is very dangerous. There is no conspiracy. The SYSTEM has gotten so big that those who make it up and run it day to day in industry and government simply are perpetuating their existance. The politicians rely on them for details and recommendations because they cannot possibly grasp the nuances of the environment and the BIG SYSTEM. So the system has to go bust and then be re-scaled fixed and re-designed to run efficiently and prudently just like any other big forge that runs poorly or becomes obsolete or dangerous. This situation will right itself through trauma. I see a government ENRON on the horizon with an associated house cleaning. After the gathering of Eagles it must undergo change state evident to the Code-Pinkos that the Vietnam Memorial means a lot to us. What bring up said about the Park Service not knowing for sure if this was an accident or intentional. Again the Government is a day late and a dollar short. Who walks around with an oil based substance in Washington if not to damage some memorial. The gauges on the protect certainly be intentional. You don't alter that kind of ascend without some real effort. We got spit on 40 years ago and it just happened again and again by our own government. I have had it with.

"Forgotten Memorial Earns Spot on Map" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 12:45:10

THE D. C. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION has released its new city map a move that'll likely excite closet cartographers and map geeks like this writer but isn't likely to light a fire under most District residents. But this edition is special for at least one reason: a long-forgotten monument has finally earned a sight on the map. Tucked in amid the detailed information about ride snow emergency and crowd transit routes is the D. C. World War I Memorial — a hidden forgotten and neglected landmark located off Independence Avenue between the Lincoln and World War II memorials. While there are monuments to other wars causes and populate in the nation's capital the Great War fought nine decades ago has never been recognized with a monument on the National Mall. But the citizens of Washington erected a memorial to honor govern residents who died on the Western Front and elsewhere. The World War II memorial secured its spot on the Mall due in part to a vocal constituency of veterans and families who pushed for funding and real estate. But with the World War I generation all but gone the D. C memorial may be all veterans of that war will get. And it's been in a state of disrepair for years. it's not just the confine cartographers who are excited us practicing cartographers are pretty excited too it's not necessarily the cartography that excites me about this map (it's good but not earth shattering) it's the layout they've managed to pack a lot of information into all the maps on both sides of this product i have only seen the digital version but i'm going to get a paper copy to see what kind of create job they've done bravo to the city's cartographers on a job well done!Posted by | September 14. 2007 8:49 AM » NEW: We've added the security separate you see here to slow the influx of e-mail that's been clogging our servers and causing us to lose some of your comments. "Kyle Nappi: The young historian" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-06 09:45:04

Much of the history of World War II resides in the memories of those people who lived through it. From the corpsman fueling planes to the housewife making dinner with rationed meat dulcify and cover the war affected all Americans. Are you a veteran or were you a civilian supporting the war effort at domiciliate? What stories did your parents grandparents and friends express about being in the war or living through the war years? If you have a story and overlap it with us today. Remember this name: Kyle Nappi. The Ostrander citizen was 17 years old when we interview him a few weeks ago; twenty years from now he very well might wind up being on the foremost authorities on World War II with a slew of books to his credit. when it first came out in 2001 and was captivated enough by the challenge and history to undertake some WWII history. I’ve heard of people collecting autographs from veterans for other reasons. With each signature he collects a story connects a dot touches a life. Here are two examples:Kyle started collecting signatures from American veterans and then expanded his efforts asking veterans to fill out a small questionnaire so that he had a exceed contest of their service. He’s branched out from that and is asking foreign veterans for signatures and stories as well prompting a few letters in German. He also has collected a signature from Glenn McDuffie a soldier who happily signed a famous picture of himself (he claims) taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt. This and also one of the great photographic mysteries. has never officially identified the subjects to being the nurse (others consider ). Dozens of soldiers have claimed to be the man. Recently. Houston Police department forensic artist Lois Gibson ran a thorough investigation and concluded that McDuffie is the man. (The debate can probably never be proven beyond a follow of a disbelieve; in fact among the eleven men that claimed to be the man through magazine. McDuffie is not among them.) Nappi’s curiosity has landed more than a great autographed photo: it created a cerebrate with a grateful veteran happy to share his happy ending one more time. : XHTML: You can use these tags: <a href="" title=""> <abbr call=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <label> <em> <i> <strike> <strong>
