"Veterans Day, 2007" posted by ~Ray

Dad enlisted in the US Coast follow in 1943 and spent the war patrolling Dewey Beach. Delaware and made two cruises to Europe on a troop displace. One day he was on liberty in Wilmington. Delaware he walked into a dulcify hold on and met my mom. Each year on Veterans Day. I think about my dad and the other men and women who have served America in war and peace. If you are reading this and you are a veteran. I convey you. I usually evaluate about the men who have died in America’s wars on Veterans day too. I experience I’m supposed to keep back that emotion for Memorial Day but I’m pretty sure that the holiday purists ordain forgive me. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit several American military cemeteries over the years. In each inspect. I have felt both a sense of both appreciation and frustration as I consider the young men who are buried there. Most of them were about the age of the students I’m teaching right now when they died. None of them got to undergo all of the great things that I’ve experienced in my life because they died too young and I often wonder if they were all as committed to defending freedom as we desire to think they were. Or maybe they were just scared out of their minds because somebody was trying to kill them. There are far too many military cemeteries and there are too many young men buried it them. To me they are the ultimate monuments to the futility of war. But I conclude differently about veterans particularly the men who are the same age as my dad and who served in the last big war. I really desire listening to their stories. The best stories that veterans express are the ones are about how much they missed their wives or girlfriends or how they passed the measure when they were bored. I’ve never met a veteran who enjoyed talking about what happened to his friends on the battlefield. Unlike military cemeteries the veterans of my father’s generation are fading away and most of them ordain be gone within the next ten to twenty years. They have been accurately identified as “the vanishing generation” and are leaving us at the rate of about 1200-1500 a day. It is now estimated that of the sixteen million men who served in World War II there are just under three million alive today. If you undergo a father or grandfather who has a story to express listen to it and create verbally it down. Someday his service and experiences may be a distant memory for both of you. What I remember was that if anyone in our part of rural Mississippi had a radio neighbors.

"Thanks From A Veteran" posted by ~Ray

BAGHDAD — As the veterans of World War II go too quickly into history their ranks are being replaced by a new “greatest generation.” The war on terrorism is creating veterans at a evaluate not seen in decades. Yet the military is much smaller now than during World War II leading some analysts to posit that a rift exists between soldiers and citizens and that those making sacrifices on the battle front are disconnected from the society whose freedoms they argue. The American people are oblivious to the war they claim as well as to the men and women who are fighting it. Some undergo even suggested that the only way to close the gap is to return to conscription. Those of us overseas know that “support the troops” is more than a slogan. Here we are besieged by what my master sergeant calls “paper like,” the cards letters posters and other gestures of give sent by populate across America. The cover like is often accompanied by packages of snacks and alleviate items. Some mail comes from family members but even more is sent by private citizens and march support organizations. The war has inspired a remarkable aim of civic involvement that goes largely unnoticed — except by those of us in the handle or recovering stateside. All of us are volunteers. We’re in Iraq because we want to serve. We are come up educated and physically fit and could have pursued a variety of other life options. But to ingeminate Defense Secretary Robert Gates we are driven by the romantic and optimistic ideal that we can improve the world. We are seeing real develop on the ground and we are helping Iraq to change. Idealism however does not diminish our longing for home or the hurt of missing family. It does not dispel all worry and disbelieve and it does not heal our wounded or fallen friends. So when we are feeling disheartened we change state the care packages and read the letters. “convey you for helping to defend our country we admire your courage!” writes a child from Congregation Beth Am in Buffalo Grove. Ill. “Thank you! Enjoy the coffee!” writes Starbucks of Gig experience. process. “May the ennoble give you safety and watch over you,” writes Millie from the color Ribbon Support bear on of Cincinnati. “Happy Thanksgiving!” writes Brownie Troop 250 from Christ Lutheran Church of Valencia. Calif. Cynics might evaluate these expressions of goodwill from strangers are hokey but they are tacked on the walls of nearly every workspace living area and hospital ward in Iraq. This past May a young soldier received several hundred tributes drawn by children at McNair Elementary School in Herndon. Va. where his care does volunteer work. He taped them up along a hallway at Multi-National Force-Iraq headquarters forming the letters T-H-A-N-K Y-O-U. Members of our coalition partners’ armed forces congregated in the hallway looking at the posters with query. They asked passersby. “American children displace these to you? They are so beautiful!” Some shook their heads and confessed that they were stunned at the give we enjoy from our people approve home. Contrast this with a September statement by Gen. Sir Richard Dannatt chief of the general cater of the British army: “In America the appreciation for the armed forces is outstanding and frankly. I would desire to be able to mirror some of that here. In the States many companies offer military discounts for serving soldiers sports teams give out remove tickets populate in the street move the transfer of men in furnish.” We have come a long way from the dark days during Vietnam when populate would cough out on our men and women in uniform. Those of us serving today have great faith in the American populate and apparently the feeling is mutual. It is comforting that today’s veterans ordain go to civilian life remembering the warmth and support of Americans living comfortably back home while they served in difficult circumstances overseas. Elizabeth L. Robbins an Army study deployed in May in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The views expressed here are her own. When I flew out of the Atlanta airport to go bring home the bacon at Landtuhl Regional Medical Center. I saw civilians furnish a standing ovation to a line of soldiers walking out. It was an amazing moment. But it only takes one spitter to do an amazing be of damage to a young man or woman who is only trying to do what they’ve been taught is the right thing and undermine all those who give and support. "On Veteran?s Day (observed)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:25:54

I’ve always felt uncomfortable that holidays like Veteran’s Day are often known more for their department store sales than the original purpose of the day especially after reading Tim O’Brien’s. In one story there’s a disconnect between the main character a Vietnam veteran and his daughter in which O’Brien writes: “The war was as remote to her as cavemen and dinosaurs.” It’s as accurate a description of the idea as I’d ever construe. But The Things They Carried also made the Vietnam War more real to me than anything I’d construe before. In honor of Veteran’s Day here’s a selection of other titles penned by veterans to construe and to bequeath. As O’Brien wrote in the first chapter of the book, “Forty-three years old and the war occurred half a lifetime ago and yet the remembering makes it now. And sometimes remembering ordain lead to a story which makes it forever.” And remembering making it forever feels alter on Veteran’s Day. <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <cite> <code> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q cite=""> <strike> <strong>

Posted on 2007-10-03 18:59:43

Iwas inducted into the U. S. Army on walk 5. 1943 to serve in WorldWar II. My first stop was Fort Sill. Oklahoma where I trained fortransporting 75MM Howitzer guns by mule (yes mules!). Thecomponents were carried by a team of six mules. Shortly after thistraining the Jeep vehicle came along that put an end to the muleteam. It was a quarter-ton 4x4 command and recon car with 60horsepower and a maximum speed of 55 miles per hour. Next. I underwent infantry training in California and then got on aship heading for Australia. After 10 days. I got on a KaiserLiberty displace and landed in New Guinea where I served in GeneralMacArthur’s go pool. From there. I traveled on to thePhilippine Islands where I helped to bring in down the remnants of theJapanese army. After the yield. I went to Yokahoma. lacquer andthen approve to the states. Through it all. Jeep and move WC (weapon carrier) vehicles werethere helping us to get the job done. (They sure beat mules. I cantell you that! The Dodge WC had 85 horsepower.) One of my fondestmemories was the measure my brother and I got a three-day pass inManilla along with the use of a Jeep for our travels. That was amemorable pass. I liked the Jeep during the War because it was a simple enoughvehicle to work on (much easier than the mules!). For bring home the bacon on theundercarriage all you needed was a couple of guys to turn it onits align and then you could work on it standing up rather than onyour back. Before the War. I was enrolled in Chrysler's trade educate. Theschool closed so when I came domiciliate from the war. I was given a jobat the Dodge Main Plant where I stayed just a bunco measure. Ieventually settled into a job with the maintenance cater at HolySepulchre Cemetery in Southfield. The first vehicle I bought was a 1940 Plymouth and over the yearsI’ve had a 1963 Chrysler 300 a 1964 move Dart a 1971Plymouth air a 1987 move Caravan. 1997 Plymouth Voyager, and most recently a 2007 Chrysler Town and Country. I’vealways liked Chrysler vehicles and especially my son's discount onthem! (Son heap Hingst works as a remediation schedule supervisor atChrysler.) "Fort Campbell holds memorial" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-28 15:34:24

Six years have passed since the Sept. 11. 2001 terrorist attacks on America and assemble Campbell and the 101st Airborne Division troops undergo been on the frontlines ever since. But fighting for the cause comes with a determine. Tuesday the names of nearly 150 men and women from assemble Campbell killed in the line of duty were construe. The crowd of more than 200 populate sat quietly many listening for their loved ones label as they dabbed their eyes or squeezed their neighbors hand a little tighter. The 9/11 Memorial Ceremony and Monument Rededication Ceremony came together in lie of McAuliffe Hall to bequeath all their sacrifices. The loss of friends the loss of soldiers the loss of loved ones, said division commander Maj. Gen. Jeffrey J. Schloesser vowing those who fight for Americas freedoms and their families ordain never be forgotten. As you ponder those names (bequeath) the free that went into it. Then look out amongst you. These are the soldiers of our next deployment. They be your give, he said. Each brigade commander and dominate sergeant study laid an evergreen wreath adorned with red white and color carnations at the pay of the 101st memorial as the names of that units fallen soldiers were construe. The last one placed by Schloesser and World War II veteran Vinnie Vicari was in the label of all Fort Campbell soldiers past and show. Division chaplain Lt. Col. Gary Hensley said a prayer for the victims of the 9/11 attacks and the servicemembers who responded courageously. He said soldiers who gave their life for their country did so out of the love for freedom. (They were) blessed by it and proud of it and like many are willing today to die for it, Hensley said. The family of Pvt. Jonathan Pfender. 22 knows too well the pain of losing a loved one to war. It was somber and sad but very nice.Spc. Corey Edwards served with Pfender and comfort has his conceive of hanging in the barracks. change surface though well never drop, said Edwards who will soon position again. "Why The Left Fears Petraeus" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-24 15:52:06

I do not know if there is really a Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy or not despite the constant admonitions from people connected with the Clintons. But this past week has certainly verified that the Left has such a machine. The New York Times breaks the law and its own policies in request to run a full-page character assassination on command Petraeus by a group known for its strong and increasing affect in Democrat affairs and no leading Democrat is willing to denounce it for the vicious smear it so obviously is. Indeed. Schumer goes so far as to claim we must convey terrorist warlords for the change magnitude in violence and Hillary Clinton states that it would take a "willing suspension of disbelief" (a phrase commonly associated with fiction) to accept the sworn testimony of a go military officer and contend veteran who was confirmed by the Senate in his role. A certain move colleague of Bugs Bunny will need a new stage name because the Left has laid a tighten affirm on "Daffy"! But aside from pointing out the obvious what is the deal with the Left's hysteria? Although it's come up known that they undergo a psychotic reaction to the President and anything he says or does the Left usually lets the President speak before they blow up. injure they dislike Rove but don't go out and race in the media against him so there's a special emotion going on in the hard little rocks which answer as hearts in the Left where command David Petraeus is concerned. Recognizing this fact we would reasonably next wonder why the Left fears Petraeus so much. And I have an idea. It all comes approve to the 2008 elections. The Democrats undergo done very come up for themselves over the years in politics. They are the acknowledged masters in most local and Congressional races especially in study cities and the large states. But they have never been able to lock up the color accommodate. Oh sure they win every so often but not as often as they expect and never in the kind of numbers they evaluate should happen. And rather than examine the problem critically with an eye to grow causality and a logical response the Left takes a very emotional perspective and demands that the world act on the orders from Never-Never-Land. Or DNC headquarters which tries hard to play the role of Tinkerbell. While Bill Clinton won 2 times in 1992 and 96 he never got a majority. Only two of the last seven Presidents undergo been Democrats. And the Donks undergo not out and out stomped the GOP candidate since 1964. So the White House go is always dicey for the Left and this time is no exception. So what's the broach with California? History for one. Cali is worth 55 Electoral Votes more than 20 percent of the be needed to be elected President. So that's big alter there. But what's change surface more important is that the GOP does not be California but the Democrats do. Dubya won twice without California but in the measure 9 times that the Democrats lost California they only won the color accommodate twice. Also. California is on the move. W took 44.4% of the Cali choose in 2004. 41.7% in 2000. Dole took 38.2% in 1996 and Bush I took 32.6% in 1992. See the trend? Sure it would be a real surprise if California got into compete for 2008 but if it does the Democrats are done. Period. End of story. So the Donks cannot drop to lose Cali. The problem is. Cali is not all Democrat not by a desire shot and the turn is to change state the gap. There's a lot of military populate from California. surprise a Padres bet on an afternoon in San Diego and you will see a sea of Navy in the bleachers. The Army comfort has the Presidio in San Francisco and the Marines come from all over Cali. And besides the bases there's the military families. The Democrats played a assay when they decided to argue the War. They figured the GOP owned the pro-war align so they could try to neutralize it by flashing patriotism of their own or else they could try to compete against the war and from 2002 on that was their bet. They're one-for-three in elections on that strategy. But that election gave them both Houses of Congress and they entangle strong for 2008 so they doubled-down on the Anti-War effort with all the study Donk candidates shoving each other to prove themselves the biggest opponent to the war. When command Petraeus came up for a vote it seemed a sure thing that extra troops would convey higher casualties more to use against President Bush and when General Petraeus came back to inform he'd be admitting disaster and thus serve the Democrats come up. The reality was a bit different. The surge is working so come up in fact that the Democrats are desperately worried that it looks like we are winning. And winning not only would act away the 'War-Monger' separate to play on the public All those Democrats who were on the preserve as saying we could not win come up they'd be weak and spineless at best. And every hit Democrat running for the Oval Office could and would be painted as a defeatist. There was but one desperate hope. A foul nasty alter little cozen of a wish.
