"stick a magnet on your suv, you've magically supported the troops" posted by ~Ray

Nice t-shirt. Here's which includes a link to. I sight it truly bizarre that some commenters say people may be offended by "the joke". What communicate? The artist designed the shirt in response to the about Army Hospital that surfaced in walk. Remember that? The American public found out for about a minute and a half how the US really supports its troops. (Those links are to wmtc posts about it which in turn include links to the story itself.)A portion of proceeds from the sale of the shirts go to a nonprofit organization that helps wounded vets and their families. That is does the job their government - who caused their disabilities in the first place - doesn't furnish a shit about doing. Most of the sites listing deaths and casualties with separate listings for US coalition. Afghan and Iraqi deaths. On the other hand there are plenty of sites that don't enumerate Iraqi deaths at all just the "heroes". (This reminds me of.) Heroes. Wow. Is there a more ill-used word in the lexicon today? No links to those sites here. What about some US vets who aren't visibly wounded? How are they doing? according to a report to be released Thursday. And homelessness is not just a problem among middle-age and elderly veterans. Younger veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan are trickling into shelters and soup kitchens seeking services treatment or back up with finding a job. The Veterans Affairs Department has identified 1,500 homeless veterans from the current wars and says 400 of them have participated in its programs specifically targeting homelessness. The National Alliance to End Homelessness a public education nonprofit based the findings of its report on numbers from Veterans Affairs and the Census Bureau. 2005 data estimated that 194,254 homeless people out of 744,313 on any given night were veterans. In comparison the VA says that 20 years ago the estimated be of veterans who were homeless on any given night was 250,000. Some advocates say the early presence of veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan at shelters does not bode well for the future. It took roughly a decade for the lives of Vietnam veterans to unravel to the point that they started showing up among the homeless. Advocates worry that intense and repeated deployments get newer veterans particularly vulnerable. I'm curious why no one has ever marketed a ribbon for populate who want to give the troops by bringing them home alive instead of in sad little boxes. I get so tired of the argument that we have to stay there to see the thing through.. we caused "the thing" no matter what revisionists desire that Mark guy think. We can't fix it; we're the reason it's happening. We can't alter it right we can only leave and defend for our arrogance and get them to choose up the pieces however they as a society see fit. Of course.. all that is hard to fit on a ribbon. So much easier when your message is "Grunt! move! Fling crap!" :) I'm curious why no one has ever marketed a ribbon for people who be to give the troops by bringing them home alive instead of in sad little boxes. There are dozens to decide from. Those are just a few. Does Jhonny Peralta have an SVU?I don't know but I bet he.(Thanks. Jere! I can't believe no one else caught that but you. Temporary mass dyslexia?) You may never know what results come of your action but if you do nothing there ordain be no result. Mohandas Karamchand GandhiNever doubt that a small assort of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has. Margaret Mead

"Race T-Shirt Etiquette" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-02 02:55:07

DUBLIN. IRELAND (Geared Up communicate) - I listen to podcasts regularly but i have fallen behind recently because i lost my ipod about a month ago now. So I’m just catching up to date with all the new stories. The one that stuck out to me was t-shirt etiquette at races. Endurance planet got the story from a trail runners blog in the states who goes by the name of and his opinion on what t-shirt should be worn on race day. I thought it was a pretty funny account of what he thinks are guidelines. 1. A shirt cannot be worn unless the wearer has participated in the event. There is an exception though: “significant others” and volunteers are absolve. 2. Any race tee less than a marathon hold shouldn’t be worn to an ultramarathon event. This goes double for the wearing of sprint-tri shirts to Ironman and Half-Ironman events. It simply doesn’t represent a high enough “cool factor ” and sends a red flag regarding your rookiness. It’s like taking a knife to a gunfight. It’s probably best just to wear a generic name-brand athletic shirt and go hide in a corner until race time. 3. When you are returning to a race in which you have previously finished then feature the apparel from the first year you completed the go. Don’t short-change yourself by wearing the apparel from the year before. It doesn’t adequately display the feat of accomplishment or the consummate veteran status that you are due. 4. Never wear a go event shirt for the (same) race you are about to do. Only rookies do this. It displays a total lack of integrity and might put the bad-heebee-jeebee-mojo on you for the race. Wearing a T-shirt of the race while currently running said go is discouraged. It’s desire being at work and constantly announcing “I’m at work”. Besides you wont undergo the change by reversal post-race apparel then…unless you like to wear sweaty pitted-out clothes on a regular basis. If you do then go back to the flood. Gomer. 5. Never wear a shirt from a run that you did not end. To wear a race shirt is to say “I finished it”. Exceptions: see guideline #1. 6. A DNF’er may wear a go shirt if… the letters DNF are boldly written on the apparel in challenge (using a fat Sharpie or a Marks-A-Lot). 7. During a race the wearing of shirt from a previously completed year is acceptable. feature the oldest T-shirt you have from that race (see guideline #3). This is probably a good practice because you now have no excuse to.

"Veterans Day" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 22:15:31

I guess one drawback of being home on a weekday is that there's nothing on television except communicate shows and soaps. And TLC. alter now I'm watching What Not To Wear. I have such issues with this show but maybe I'm just jealous. They take this woman who is a care and a bring home the bacon from domiciliate lawyer. First of all they publicly humiliate her by telling her she looks like egest in lie of all her closest friends. They secretly film her at her worst and make fun of her. Her wardrobe is very casual. OK a little too casual but comfortable. This woman is not out with socialites everyday not in court saving the world not on TV. No she's just a Mom who is worried about taking her kids to school filing papers and typing up briefs and cram at domiciliate. Her occasional measure out might be a night out with friends or a move to the shops. Why does she be a $225 apparel and draw heels to do this? I evaluate the there should be a What Not To Wear-Wal Mart Edition! This would be more my speed. Then I could actually keep my wardrobe after the initial buy. Think how far you could stretch $5000 at Wal Mart or aim where $5000 would only get you a few new items in New York at the expensive designer shops. I think this show assumes that we can all drop to dress like this on a regular basis. Personally. I would be a fantastic candidate for this show. OK my work clothes are non-negotiable but my civvies get a lot to be desired. I own exactly 5 pairs of shoes (not counting combat boots). I have 2 pairs of running shoes (one good unify and one unify that I no longer wear but can't throw out for some cerebrate). 1 pair of sandals. 1 pair of snow boots and one pair of black pumps (which only get worn with my dress blues). The idea of buying more shoes just never crosses my mind. I undergo 1 pair of jeans that are just about to rip because they are so old. I had 2 pairs before but I ripped one of them over the summer right at the area where the ass meets the leg totally un-fixable and quite embarrassing as we were out to dinner at the time the rest consists of a few shirts oversizes T-shirts that I sometimes feature around the house and workout pants that I wear all the measure at domiciliate. Stacy London would probably go out is she saw me. As I am writing the I am wearing pink flannel pants and a color stretchy T-shirt. My big act at getting myself together today was brushing my hair teeth and putting my contacts in. I think if I did have expensive clothes. I would be too nervous to wear them because I would ruin them in a heartbeat. And they would be covered with cat hair anyway. Am I the only one who feels this way? Is fashion really important and I'm just not getting it? If I had the $5000 they furnish on this show. I could sight a lot of other things I would rather buy than clothes. My bigfoot boy's shoes alone would take up a good part of it. I completed my run last night and made it to 6.25 miles a accommodate mile over my goal. I'm sticking to 6 miles this week because I did struggle to alter it. I absolutely had to drag myself to the treadmill measure night and Saturday night. Hopefully this week will be exceed. I evaluate if I could see even an inkling of results desire tighter legs or weight loss. I would me so much more motivated. alter now its all feeling desire it's for nothing but sore ankles and aggravation. See you tomorrow.

"Veterans' Day" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 18:19:59

We spent Veterans' Day with some actual Vets.... We went to Red State's new and pretty amazing military museum. It has been out there between here and Grad School city for quite a while but we never managed to make it out there until today. It wasn't crowded so we had plenty of measure and space to look at the displays of aircraft and missiles. Hubby knows a lot about this stuff so he kept a narrative going the whole way. At one aircraft we ran into an older vet who told Hubby a clump of stories about his measure in the service. He was wearing his Red State VFW hat jacket and apparel. His wife was in a well-worm t-shirt with a huge US sign splashed across her chest. She completed the be with some flashy flag earrings. The old guy was in for a big accumulate of the Cold War and had some tales to express he'd been stationed some of the same places as Hubby only about 20-30 years before him... As they compared service stories she told me she was his second wife. She confided that she married him after he got out of the military but that she gets to use his retirement benefits. At another aircraft a very distinguished older gentleman and his country club wife told Hubby about flying the first intercontinental flight guided by inertial guidance (whatever that is...). Inside yet another aircraft we met some guys who are currently assigned to work on that aircraft. They were climbing around to see how their copy differed from the one in the museum. It seems that their generation of aircraft (6 out from the one we saw) isn't much different than the museum conjoin... I have to say the beat way to spend Veterans' Day is with a Vet or five...

"Barroom Brawls Texas-OU Style" posted by ~Ray

Ever since I can remember probably since the birth of beer and football the rivalry between the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma has been legendary. Folks in Dallas the place of the annual face-off between the two teams know to be off the streets on Texas-OU weekend. I guess the schools desire ago decided to meet on neutral territory in order to cut down on the bloodshed and rebel-rousin’ enjoyed by all those good ol’ boys. One thing’s for sure… It takes a mighty dumb redneck to go into a bar in Oklahoma City wearing a Texas Longhorns T-shirt. But according to guard that’s just what Brian Christopher Thomas a 32-year-old Texas fan did when he strolled into Henry Hudson’s Pub on create’s Day. Reportedly the comprehend of that Texas T-shirt set off some less-than-good-natured “football trash communicate” by Oklahoma fan Allen Michael Beckett. 53 a perform deacon and Army combat veteran. Thomas later told guard that he tried to ignore Beckett but finally gave up. When he went to the bar to pay his tab he said. Beckett grabbed him in the crotch pulled him to the ground and wouldn’t let go so he fought approve. By the time the other bar patrons separated the two men according to Thomas he had suffered an injury to his Billy Bock. Beckett’s attorney admitted that his client may have commented about Thomas’ apparel but said it was just good-natured ribbing and that Beckett change surface apologized to Thomas when he got upset. Then. Bock said. Thomas approached Beckett at the bar and threatened him. “My guy (client Beckett) was defending himself and just took hold back of the situation.” Beckett a federal auditor has pleaded not guilty and will appear in act again October 4 two days before the Sooners and Longhorns game at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. He faces up to five years in prison and a $500 fine if convicted of aggravated assail and battery. Thomas has returned to his job as a Sam’s Club meat-cutter. Neither man attended either university. Posted on 2007-10-17 16:21:10

This year I'm joggling the marathon for a intend. I'm working to raise money for Global Business back up (GBA). An excellent charity that endeavors to help populate help themselves. Click here and Someone from the asked marathon running veterans for hints to pass along to first timers. I know a few first timers like and so here are a few things learned from doing 9. Most will apply to other marathons too. 1. If you’re taking El it will be incredibly crowded. Be prepared to be smashed and experience a cacophony of hit odors. 2. Don’t get discouraged by the hold. After all the Chicago Marathon is only equivalent to going up and down the Sears lift 40 times (to the top antenna). 3. Watch out for flying accommodate in the beginning. populate always feel compelled to throw off sweatshirts & sweatpants in the beginning. They even throw wet bottles! Be careful in the beginning because this can really throw off your race. This is especially precarious for. 4. Don’t stop completely at wet stops. Grab your wet/Gatorade and keep moving. People behind you will run into you. If you have to forbid alter sure you get off to the side of the cover. Some people are oblivious to other racers. 5. The sooner you finish the more food you’ll get. The selection of food goes drink with every person who finishes. This should provide some motivation to get finished a bit quicker. 6. Bring an extra set of clothes to dress into. When you end a marathon you’ll be sweaty and bring in. If you change right away you’ll feel better and also forbid chafing problems. I recommend bringing a new shirt a light jacket a change of socks and warm-up pants. No matter how hot it is you’ll be cold for a short while after the race. 7. Don’t go away out too abstain. You’ll burn-out by mile 18. The crowd and atmosphere will get you excited and you’ll naturally run faster than you be. No problem just make sure you slow it drink before you cross the connect over the Chicago River.  act heed Brewmaster. 8. feature something with your name on it. Studies show that people will shout and encourage for you more often if you undergo your name on your apparel or a hat. And hearing people yell your name will give you a burst of energy that will help displace you across the finish lie. 9. Tell your friends and family what align of the street you run on. It’s really hard to see people in a marathon. If you don’t experience where they are you can easily miss them. Also tell them how fast you evaluate to run. People are coming out to see you. alter sure they can. 10. Make reservations for a pasta dinner now! You can’t get into a decent Italian Restaurant on marathon eve. 11. It was interesting — we didn’t undergo a lot of interactions with Iraqis. To me that was one of the first telltale signs that something was amiss with the war. We went over there and we’re sitting in Kuwait and I said. “OK where are our translators?” And our whole battalion didn’t undergo any translators. Instantly I was like. OK when we get out to interact we’re told that Marines — there’s no better friend no worse enemy. We like to be their friends but how’s that interaction going to take place? We’re not being taught any bit of Iraqi grow. DREW CAMERON: I was in the field artillery unit. We were attached with 4th Infantry Division. We pushed north in large trucks ammunition trucks — HEMTTs [Heavy Expanded Mobile Tactical transport pronounced Hemmitt] — and spent our time going to different places where there were stockpiled weapons and picking those up. DC: I didn’t have any training. My platoon sergeant was a veteran of the first leave act war so he kind of took the bring about in some of the tactics. But no literature or classes. Or training on cultural norms — what is culturally acceptable what is not. It was kind of hit-or-miss play it by ear. I bequeath an occasion at a traffic-control point. A truck was trying to come through because the woman was pregnant she was giving birth. And our policy was to alter everyone get out of the vehicles inspect their vehicles and send them through. So the men were sitting in front there were five women in the approve this woman was obviously in a great broach of hurt they’re trying to get to the local clinic or doctor and we pulled her out of the vehicle. Where to place their hands. How to bind them. How to detain someone essentially. MH: I was embarrassed about my aim of prior knowledge about Iraq. I went in thinking. Oh this is some third-world country. Well. OK yes. Saddam was an evil dictator but yet. Iraq had the highest level of higher education in the lay East. Iraq had some of the best hospitals in the lay East. This was a beat functioning society when we came. And when we got there. I saw that. It wasn’t the image of this starving arrive this third-world nation that we were told needs our help. ADRIENNE KINNE: I was an Arabic linguist with military intelligence. Right after 9/11. I was activated with three other people in my unit. We were mobilized at assemble Bragg and attached to an MI [Military Intelligence] Unit in the South. We were intercepting faxes and communications from places like the Iraqi National Congress. They sounded just like us. I mean their voices when they would call their family members up at whatever hour in the middle of the night — because that was the one time they had a chance to make a telecommunicate call — they were so quiet. They didn’t be to wake up their family member too much so they would be all change intensity and nice and sweet. And meanwhile we were just bombing the inform out of their city and their country. When I hear [Matt and Drew] talk about how they didn’t undergo any language training or any cultural training and they were going into Iraq with basically no knowledge of the situation there. I mean. I’ve done so many classes about Iraq and written reports about Iraq and the culture and everything. There’s no move of me that really wanted to be [in Iraq] then but I feel like if I had been then I could undergo done something that was actually meaningful. But instead I was stuck in some building with no windows listening to populate as we bombed them. And not being able.

"Vedder rocks fans, not Donahue" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-03 18:58:41

More than 50 people waited in the rush lie at last night’s world premiere of “be of War”. The first person in that lie waited five hours for the 9 p m screening. A few wore Pearl Jam t-shirts and the first four rows were filled with camera-toting fans buzzing about Vedder and chanting “Eddie. Eddie” before the screening. One paid C$55 for a scalper’s book nearly three times the regular box office determine. As Vedder sat drink to strum the first chords of his songs the theater erupted in flashes. He stopped, mugged a bit for the cameras and then launched into “Long Nights”, a tribute to Young, and “No More”. Young counts Vedder as a personal hero and said he used to listen to collect Jam songs to help change intensity what was going on inside his head when he was sad. “I idolized him as a kid and he helped me through a lot of depressing moments…whenever I watch this movie about myself it is extremely cathartic to hear him because it helps me conclude exceed,” Young said. The Pearl Jam frontman does not be to have the same impact on Donahue. A day later, asked how Vedder got involved in “be of War,” Donahue said simply that he met him on a Ralph Nader race bus in 2000. We are having some issues with e-mail. "IntifadaNYC: Racist campaign claims Khalil Gibran principal" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-28 15:33:03

Imagine... Aveteran Latina educator with a years-long preserve of function supportingLatino/a youth and building bridges between Latino/a and non-Latino/acommunities is slated to be principal of a new middle school with afocus on Hispano-Caribbean studies and Spanish language. She enduresmonths of vitriolic attacks from right-wing hate websites and blogs, and from the Murdoch news organizations. Finally the Murdoch mediauncover that she’s on the board of an organization that shares anoffice with a Latina girls’ empowerment organization. The organizationhas produced a T-shirt with the image of Che Guevara and the words“Hasta la victoria siempre.” The Murdoch media inform out (rightly) thatthe “victoria” to which Che referred was the violent depose of allcapitalist governments including the U. S. The media bespeak that theeducator condemn the T-shirt but instead she says that the girls’intention was to point to the victory of tolerance and coexistence overanti-Latino/a prejudice in New York. The media howl. The educator quicklyapologizes admitting that she did not take into account the effectthat the image of Che has on Cuban-American refugees of Castro’soppression. The presidentmakes no mention of the educator’s exemplary preserve or the racistcontext in which the controversy about the T-shirt has taken displace. TheUFT president says. "maybe ultimately she should not be a principal."The print air and Internet media trumpet the UFT president’scondemnation far and wide and the next day the educator resigns fromthe principalship. Now create by mental act that the educator is a respectedAfrican-American and the new lay educate will undergo an Afrocentricfocus. The T-shirt has an visualise of Malcolm X holding a rifle and thewords “By any means necessary.” The media point out (rightly) that the“means” to which Malcolm X referred included armed assay. Theeducator says that the girls’ intention was to inform towardsnon-violent African-American empowerment not armed assay. When theeducator apologizes she admits that she did not act into account theeffect that the image of Malcolm X holding a weapon might have onefforts to combat gun crimes in New York City. The UFT president isquoted saying. "maybe ultimately she should not be a principal." Thenext day the educator resigns from the principalship. Inreality it’s unlikely that these T-shirts would have promptedsustained media attacks or that the UFT president would have evertaken such an extreme public reaction. And if the president had takensuch challenge there would undergo been an outcry from the rank and file, and not just Latino/a or African-American members. In New York City,T-shirts of Che Guevara. Malcolm X. Mumia Abu-Jamal or Leonard Peltierdo not instill fear provoke tabloid campaigns or prove in demands forany person to make a wholesale repudiation of other members of theircommunity. Now create by mental act that the veteran educator is anArab-American and a Muslim with a years-long record of servicesupporting Arab-American and Muslim youth and building bridges betweenArab-American. Muslim. Jewish and Christian communities. The newmiddle school will focus on Arab studies and Arabic language. Aftermonths of vitriolic attacks from right-wing hate websites and blogs, the Murdoch news organizations uncover that she’s on the board of anorganization that shares an office with an Arab-American girls’empowerment organization. The collective has produced a T-shirt withthe words “Intifada NYC.” The Murdoch media point out (rightly) thatfor most New Yorkers “intifada” connotes terrorist attacks on Israelicivilians. When the media demand that the educator denounce theT-shirt she says. “The evince [intifada] basically means 'shaking off.'That is the grow evince if you look it up in Arabic. I understand it isdeveloping a contradict connotation due to the uprising in thePalestinian-Israeli areas. I don't believe the intention is to have anyof that kind of [violence] in New York City. I think it's pretty muchan opportunity for girls to express that they are move of New York Citysociety… and shaking off oppression." The media howl. Theeducator quickly apologizes saying. “The word 'intifada' is completelyinappropriate as a T-shirt slogan. I regret suggesting otherwise. Byminimizing the word's historical associations. I implied that I condoneviolence and threats of violence. That view is anathema to me.” Afterthe apology the UFT president who had been supportive of the newmiddle school and its principal is quoted in the media condemning theeducator’s initial defense of the T-shirt. The president makes nomention of the educator’s exemplary record or the racist context inwhich the controversy about the T-shirt has taken place. The UFTpresident says. "maybe ultimately she should not be a principal." Theprint air and Internet media exclaim the UFT president’scondemnation far and wide and the next day the educator resigns fromthe principalship. The third scenario happened in August of2007. Our union could undergo stood with Arab-American and Muslim studentsand educators against the onslaught they have endured since 9-11 butinstead we joined the chorus of racists led by the teacher-hating,Arab-hating New York Post and Fox News who hounded veteran educatorDebbie Almontaser out of her job as principal of the Gibran Academy. Inwriting all of this. I do not claim to speak for the members of mychapter. I did not consult them. I do not claim to speak for a UFTcaucus. I do not be to one. I certainly do not affirm to speak forDebbie Almontaser. Although as a District 15 educator. I am acquaintedwith Debbie and her bring home the bacon. I have not seen or spoken with her since longbefore the Gibran Academy controversy erupted at P. S. 282. Inpresenting the imaginary scenarios. I do not claim to speak for thepolitical views of anyone in the Latino/a or African-Americancommunities. Not one organization I'm aware of – NOT ONE – has stood by this principle or the educate. Not even the union that represents principals to say nothing of principles. The media specifically the New York affix and the New York Sun (a hard-right Jewish daily that actually refers to a country called "Red China" in its headlines...) undergo gone ape inform over the Khalil Gibran Aademy.. and SHOCKING the continue of the NYC teachers union is such a racist conjoin of shit that she will literally enable this kind of mob scene hounding out a woman who's just trying to run a educate in the approach of a mass-media lynch mob. She personifies the "banality of evil" that Hannah Arendt analyzed in her schedule Eichmann in Jerusalem. But of cover we can't analyse anyone to Eichmann and evaluate to inform.. not in this free country. First lesson: never furnish those fuckers an advance. Not one inch. If you avoid defend try to inform what you "really mean" they ordain conceal you. Just check how this unfolded and sum it up. Never back drink on the humanity of anyone. Go on the offense. Learn that from the heros of the Intifada the educate children who went up against tanks and forge guns with rocks and heart. Second lesson: the United States of America as a society is racist to the core out. populate who were once victims of discrimination and religious persecution quickly learn that the path to success in this country is to be as fucked up to others as you yourself once experienced. Watching the continue of the largest teachers union in the country change out her own.

"Okla-Texas rivalry gets heated over a t-shirt!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-24 15:50:59

By Sean Murphy. Associated Press Writer OKLAHOMA CITY To some Oklahoma football fans there are things that just aren't done in the heart of Sooner Nation and one of them is to go into a bar wearing a Texas Longhorns T-shirt. That's exactly what touched off a bloody contend that left a Texas-shirt-wearing fan nearly castrated and an Oklahoma fan facing aggravated assault charges that could put him in prison for up to five years. The shocking inspect has set off a raging consider in this football-crazed region about the extreme passions behind a change taste rivalry. Some legal observers have even questioned whether this case could ever truly have an impartial jury. "I've actually heard callers on talk communicate say that this guy deserved what he got for wearing a Texas T-shirt into a bar in the middle of Sooner country," said Irven Box an attorney in this city 20 miles from Oklahoma's campus in Norman. According to police. 32-year-old Texas fan Brian Christopher Thomas walked into Henry Hudson's Pub on June 17 wearing a Longhorns T-shirt and quickly became the focus of football "trash talk" from another regular. 53-year-old Oklahoma fan Allen Michael Beckett. Thomas told guard that when he decided to get and went to the bar to pay his tab. Beckett grabbed him in the crotch pulled him to the ground and wouldn't let go even as bar patrons tried to break it up. When the two men were separated. Thomas looked down and realized the extent of his injuries. "He could see both of his testicles hanging on the outside of his be," said Thomas' attorney. Carl Hughes. "He was wearing a unify of color shorts which made it that much worse." It took more than 60 stitches to close the wound and police interviewed Thomas at a nearby hospital emergency dwell. Beckett's attorney. Billy Bock concedes that his client commented about Thomas' shirt but said it was just good-natured ribbing and that he apologized to Thomas when it appeared to disturb the Texas fan. Later. Bock said Thomas approached his client at the bar and threatened him. "My client is a little man and this guy (Thomas) is 30 to 40 pounds bigger than him," Bock said. "He's bigger stronger younger and probably faster and he aggressively leaned in and touched my client and threatened to defeat him up. ... My guy was defending himself and just took control of the situation." Thomas' attorney disputes Beckett's version. "That's total malarkey," Hughes said. "My client never said a evince to him. He got up to pay and when he paid and left a tip the guy grabbed him." Beckett a 53-year-old perform deacon federal auditor and former Army contend veteran has pleaded not guilty. His next court appearance comes Oct. 4 two days before the Sooners and Horns involve in their annual football bet at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Thomas who once lived in Houston and became a Texas fan during the heyday of star running back Earl Campbell is still recovering from his injuries but has returned to work as a meat cutter at a Sam's Club warehouse store. desire Beckett and Thomas many fans of the two college squads never attended either university but have come to determine so closely with these teams that they connect banners to their cars wear team colors on game day and change surface undergo programmed their car horns to compete school fight songs. Dallas police Sgt. Andy Harvey a 12-year veteran of the force said it's not uncommon for fights to break out between fans of the two schools. "People are passionate about their teams and their universities and that's a good thing," he said. "but when you mix a real passionate sports fan and then get a little alcohol in there sometimes it's not a good mix." On both Texas and Oklahoma fan Web sites boosters trade familiar tales of having their car tires slashed or windshields smashed for sporting the opposing team's sticker in enemy territory. Assistant District Attorney Scott Rowland said the rivalry will undergo no bearing on the way the inspect is prosecuted. "It appears that it played a move in the fight," he said. "but that won't compete any more of a role in our handling of the inspect than would a contend over a girl or a car or a song on the jukebox." The Associated Press you should see dallas around Red River shootout. 320 bars divided down the lay burnt orange one side color on the other. All it takes is a look for.. and its on!!! We're not proud of it it just what a neutral place will do to a rivalry year in/out and it's still not a cerebrate to comprehend another mans NUTS! Most likely some color trailer trash hick is responsible & their fellow hicks support their actions. The sad move is cast aside desire this is allowed to be & actually choose. That kind of cram happens every year always has and always ordain probably. The mouth of the bind makes it be like it's a rare occasion for a couple of drunk sports fans from compete schools get in a fight. Its the nature of the guys injuries that alter this news worthy. I wish which ever one is found guilty they alter an example out of them just.

"First Person: Teachers? Union Undermines Arab School" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-22 16:06:10

However this basic fact has been obscured in the recent takedown of Debbie Almontaser the veteran Brooklyn educator. Yemeni-American and hijab-wearing Muslim who was the founding principal of the Khalil Gibran International Academy (KGIA) an Arabic-English dual-language public secondary school in Brooklyn that is scheduled to open with the new educate year. Before Almontaster was ambushed by the New York Post. KGIA endured months of vitriolic attacks from right-wing websites desire Stop the Madrassa. Militant Islam observe and Little color Footballs. Predictably the affix the New York Sun. Fox News and New York express Assembly Member Dov Hikind jumped eagerly into the break. It’s the same direct of characters. Daniel Pipes among them who trumped up false charges of anti-Semitism to try to change state down Arab scholars at Columbia University in 2004 and 2005. According to a inform in the Aug. 17 Jewish Week. Almontaser was misled by affix reporters in an interview for an bind published on Aug. 6. The Post submitted questions in advance before the NYC Department of Education (NYC DOE) would accept to let them converse Almontaser. All of the questions were about KGIA. At the end of the interview the reporter asked offhandedly what “intifada” means. Almontaser who is after all an educator looked up the evince in the dictionary and translated it accurately: “shaking off.” The reporter then told Almontaser that the Yemeni-American organization on whose come in she sits shares office lay with Arab Women Active in the Arts and Media (AWAAM) and that AWAAM had produced a T-shirt with the words “Intifada NYC.” Almontaser to her credit refused to throw the girls from AWAAM under a bus instead referring to their nonviolent assay to move off oppression in their own lives. The affix quoted her as saying “I understand it is developing a contradict connotation due to the uprising in the Palestinian-Israeli areas. I don’t believe the intention is to undergo any of that kind of [violence] in New York City. I evaluate it’s pretty much an opportunity for girls to convey that they are part of New York City society … and shaking off oppression.” On the same day the article appeared. Almontaser wrote in an telecommunicate to community supporters. “I was misrepresented and trapped by the reporter. Those were not my claim words and the words I did use were taken out of context.” Later that day she released a statement through the NYCDOE that construe. “The word ‘intifada’ is completely inappropriate as a T-shirt slogan. I experience suggesting otherwise. By minimizing the word’s historical associations. I implied that I condone violence and threats of violence. That view is anathema to me.”RANDI WEINGARTEN INTERVENESOn Aug. 7 the affix without reference to Almontaser’s Aug. 6 statement of regret ran an editorial asking. “What is she doing with the job in the first displace?”On Aug. 8 the affix published a earn from Randi Weingarten president of my union the United Federation of Teachers in which she wrote. “I accept wholeheartedly with your editorial,” and. “While the city teachers’ union initially took an open-minded approach to this educate both parents and teachers have every alter to be concerned about children attending a educate run by someone who doesn’t instinctively criticise campaigns or ideas tied to violence.” In her earn. Weingarten chose to ignore both Almontaser’s Aug. 6 statement and her proven record as a peacemaker. On Aug. 9 the Post quoted Weingarten saying among other things. “maybe ultimately she should not be a principal.” On Aug. 10 Almontaser resigned perhaps under pressure from Schools Chancellor Joel Klein and/or Mayor Bloomberg. In her resignation earn she wrote. “I undergo spent the past two decades of my lifebuilding bridges among populate of all faiths — particularly among Muslims and Jews. Unfortunately a small assort of highly misguided individuals has launched a relentless contend on me because of my religion.” Rabbi Michael Paley scholar-in-residence at United Jewish Appeal-Federation of New York (Paley’s daughter is in rush of enrollment at KGIA) told Jewish Week that the campaign against Almontaser was a “high-tech lynching.” If it was a lynching my union did not string up the capture but it was the UFT that kicked away the entice. I’m at a loss to explain why my union which continues to support KGIA piled on when the attacks on the educate’s principal were at their shrillest. The union leadership insists that we were acting on our deep commitment to peace and nonviolence but that’s a strange excuse for joining in a transparently racist and Islamophobic contend. I suspect that Weingarten sensing which way the go was blowing on Aug. 7 and 8 decided to compete to the basest instincts of some of her be and file. The membership of the UFT is lay categorise and majority color and many are Jewish. Not all middle-class white Jews lend credence to the Almontaser witch capture — I’m middle-class white and Jewish myself — but Weingarten was counting on many of her members being solidly behind the affix on this air. She may be alter. But I don’t evaluate that she counted on the firestorm of criticism she was to allow after Almontaser’s resignation. Those of us in the UFT and outside of it who are outraged at the attacks on Almontaser are not going to just let this matter displace. We will act to subject the racist consequences of Weingarten’s statements so that the next measure the right-wing media hit squads go after an educator she’ll evaluate twice before lending them her voice. Steve Quester is a Brooklyn-based UFT Chapter leader and veteran early childhood educator. For more see Jews for Racial and Economic Justice (jfrej org) and Arab Women Active in the Arts and Media (awaam org). I be to thank the editors of the Indypendent for giving me an opportunity to speak out on this issue. I desire to take air though with the call of the conjoin. (For the record the Indypendent editors gave me an opportunity to come up with a call prior to publication and I should undergo been more helpful.) To have in mind to KGIA as an “Arab educate” is to imply that it is a educate for Arabs. It is not. It is a New York City public school and it ordain answer a diverse groups of learners as do all New York City public schools. The fact that it is a dual-language schedule in Arabic and English which recruits students whose dominant language is English and students whose dominant language is Arabic ordain convey that it will probably undergo a relatively larger percentage of Arab-American students than many other schools but half or more of the students will be of heritages other than Arab-American. We are Brooklynites of different races many ethnic and national backgrounds and several religious affiliations who accept that there is dwell in our public schools system for a educate that teaches Arabic language and grow along with math. English and social studies and that it can remain fully public while doing so. We accept there is a need in our complex world for students of all backgrounds to alter to be in and bring about their communities states and our country and that languages such as Chinese. Spanish. Hebrew and Arabic ordain be crucial to that preparation. As there are schools and programs that include the teaching of Chinese and Hispanic language and grow so now there is one that teaches Arabic language and grow. This is.
