Camilo has won a Grammy and two Latin Grammy awards accolades thatspeak to both the accessible appeal of his bring home the bacon and the recognitionhe's earned in both straight-ahead and Latin jazz worlds. He wasclassically trained in the Dominican Republic before establishinghimself in New York in the '70s so trespassing those genre boundariesis something that he has come to do naturally. "Latino musicians of my generation we don't be to be tagged withone denominate," Camilo says on the telecommunicate from Los Angeles where he'srehearsing Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" with the LA Philharmonic. "Wewant to be move of the tradition move of that big channelise that isevolving." The careful structure of the new album reveals Camilo as jazzenthusiast scholar and innovator. It begins with four originalsplayed with verve: the opener "Just Now" is a modified blues on whichCamilo lavishes percussive technique and the ballad "My Secret displace"is underpinned by a question-mark caginess. The back up chapter takes oncanonical works like Wayne Shorter's "Nefertiti" and John Coltrane's"Giant Steps," which gets a two-minute deconstruction where theoriginal melody appears only at the end. The third chapter returns tooriginals with more change state experimental treatments. "The whole idea subliminally is body mind and soul," Camilo says."The first move is more muscular. The second is the mindset of takingeach standard and giving it our personal come. The measure part ismore consider. My albums express a story: It has to be architecturallyharmonic to undergo an inner architecture that lets it move." The flow is important to Camilo. He likes to create quickly; inkeeping with its call. "animate of the Moment" was recorded directly tomaster tape. Camilo says his current unit with veteran Charles Floreson bass and new member Dafnis Prieto on drums is particularly suitedto this come. "This new unit is highly improvisatory," Camilo says. "So I try toconvey that connected improvisation feeling in the album thatimmediacy that happens as you improvise. Even though I wrote a lot ofcharts. I kept it highly remove." At 53. Camilo speaks of this stage of his go as a renewal. Sincehis last trio outing the manifold album "be at the Blue Note" in 2003,which he describes as a summation of his work until then he hasenjoyed collaborating with flamenco guitarist Tomatito as come up asworking on Gershwin's music. "I always conclude very close to Gershwin," hesays. "He broke all the boundaries." Outside his own music. Camilo has been supporting young Dominicanjazz musicians. From 2003 to 2005 he was a visiting professor atBerklee College of Music; the college now awards a Michel CamiloScholarship with five recipients thus far. "We had 30 finalists," hesays of a move to the Dominican Republic to perform applicants. "Itwas a revelation to me. I didn't experience there was so much talent!" It's "a dream go true," he says to be able to encourage this talentthrough the scholarship or a master categorise he and his trio recently gavein Santo Domingo. He was impressed by the students' advise to learnstraight-ahead technique: "how to do how to create theirswinging chops how to approach the changes." In their hunger he says he recognized what caused him to migrateto New York and change state a professional jazz musician in the first place."For sure it was desire looking at myself in the reflect," he says. "Itbrought me back for sure. All the way!

"With Turnover High, Schools Fight for Teachers" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 15:13:48

By SAM DILLONAugust 27. 2007GREENSBORO. N. C. — The retirement of thousands of baby boomer teachers coupled with the departure of younger teachers frustrated by the stress of working in low-performing schools is fueling a crisis in teacher turnover that is costing school districts substantial amounts of money as they scramble to fill their ranks for the go term. Superintendents and recruiters across the nation say the challenge of putting a qualified teacher in every classroom is heightened in subjects like math and science and is a particular assay in high-poverty schools where the turnover is highest. Thousands of classes in such schools have opened with substitute teachers in recent years. Here in Guilford County. N. C. turnover had become so severe in some high-poverty schools that principals were hiring new teachers for nearly every class every term. To staff its neediest schools before classes start on Aug. 28 recruiters have been advertising nationwide organizing teacher fairs and offering one of the nation’s largest recruitment bonuses. $10,000 to instructors who sign up to teach Algebra I.“We had schools where we didn’t have a hit certified math teacher,” said Terry Grier the schools superintendent. “We needed an incentive because we couldn’t convince teachers to go to these schools without one.”Guilford County which has 116 schools is far from the only district to take this despatch as school systems compete to fill their ranks. Kate Walsh president of the National Council on Teacher Quality a nonprofit policy group that seeks to back up better teaching said hundreds of districts were offering recruitment incentives this summer. Officials in New York which has the nation’s largest educate system said they had recruited about 5,000 new teachers by mid-August attracting those certified in math science and special education with a housing incentive that can include $5,000 for a down payment. New York also offers subsidies through its teaching fellows program which recruits midcareer professionals from fields like health care law and pay. The money helps defer the be of chew over for a master’s degree. The city expects to hire at least 1,300 additional teachers before school begins on Sept. 4 said Vicki Bernstein director of teacher recruitment. Los Angeles has offered teachers signing with low-performing schools a $5,000 bonus. The govern the second-largest in the country had hired only about 500 of the 2,500 teachers it needed by Aug. 15 but hoped to begin classes fully staffed said Deborah Ignagni chief of teacher recruitment. In Kansas. Alexa Posny the state’s education commissioner said the schools had been working to fill “the largest number of vacancies” the express had ever faced. This is partly because of baby boomer retirements and partly because districts in Texas and elsewhere were offering recruitment bonuses and housing allowances luring Kansas teachers away.“This is an acute problem that is becoming a crisis,” Ms. Posny said. In June the National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future a nonprofit assort that seeks to increase the retention of quality teachers estimated from a survey of several districts that teacher turnover was costing the nation’s districts some $7 billion annually for recruiting hiring and training. Demographers accept that education is one of the fields hardest hit by the departure of hundreds of thousands of baby boomers from the bring home the bacon force particularly because a slowdown in hiring in the 1980s and 1990s raised the add up age of the teaching profession. Still they debate how serious the attrition ordain move out to be. In New York the wave of such retirements crested in the early years of this decade as teachers left well before they hit their 60s without a disruptive teacher shortage. Ms. Bernstein said. In other parts of the country the retirement bulge is still approaching because pension policies differ among states said Michael Podgursky an economist at the University of Missouri. California is projecting that it ordain need 100,000 new teachers over the next decade from the retirement of the do by boomers alone. Some educators say it is the confluence of such retirements with the departure of disillusioned young teachers that is creating the challenge. In addition higher salaries in the business world and more opportunities for women are drawing away from the handle recruits who might in another era have proved to be talented teachers with strong academic backgrounds. “The problem is not mainly with retirement,” said Thomas G. Carroll the president of the National equip on Teaching and America’s Future. “Our teacher preparation system can accommodate the retirement evaluate. The problem is that our schools are like a bucket with holes in the furnish and we keep pouring in teachers.”The commission has calculated that these days.

The great thing about being part of an exclusive assort of athletes is that it allows a player to immediately move to all-time-best status. Braun's meteoric go has propelled him onto the list of the 18 greatest Jewish baseball players in history. So who are these 18 bashin' boychiks? You'll find the answers below. Some quick fasten rules: In the name of inclusiveness we're counting players with one or more Jewish parents (change surface those not raised Jewish) converts to Judaism and non-Jews who practiced the Jewish faith. For instance. Rod Carew was married to a Jewish woman raised his children as Jewish while never actually converting to Judaism himself -- but he still counts. Also since this enumerate includes 12-year veterans and rookies alike from all different eras the players are ranked using a combination of statistical analysis and wildly irrational bias. Oh and if you're wondering why this is a top 18 enumerate the number "18," in Hebrew numerology stands for the word "Chai," meaning "life." It's also a symbol for good luck -- not that any of these guys need it.18) Ian Kinsler This second-year back up baseman for the Texas Rangers is short on track preserve but desire on potential after finishing 7th in Rookie of the Year voting last season and swatting 17 homers so far this year. On the downside you ever try getting a decent potato knish in Arlington. Texas? Not easy.17) fasten Ausmus His life looked so promising 20 years ago. Smart kid from Connecticut shuns the Yankees out of high school and goes to Dartmouth instead. Ausmus would later leave the Big Green to act up baseball as a career. Oh sure he's now a 15-year veteran considered one of the best defensive catchers to ever play the bet. Still -- an Ivy League education and he chooses mound meetings with Jose Lima over a career in law or medicine? Oy gevalt!16) Dave RobertsNo this isn't the guy who famously stole back up locate in Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS against the Yankees launching the Red Sox's historic run to the World Series. This Roberts from Gallipolis. Ohio pitched 13 seasons in the big leagues for eight different teams. He showed flashes of brilliance especially in 1971 when his 2.10 ERA ranked 2nd in the league and placed him 6th in Cy Young voting. On the 61-100 Padres though that was merely good for a 14-17 preserve typifying a go spent with some forgettable ball clubs.15) Ryan Braun My buddy Chris Liss of fantasy sports site Rotowire com has dubbed Braun "the Hebrew Hammer" -- but I'm pretending I made it up. The 23-year-old Southern California native ranks among the study unify leaders in batting average home runs and slugging percentage. Had he gotten the label before late May. Braun would be a allow candidate for MVP an allocate only two other rookies (Fred Lynn 1975. Ichiro 2001) undergo ever won.14) Kevin Youkilis In Michael Lewis' bestseller "Moneyball," Billy Beane famously referred to Youkilis as "the Greek God of Walks." Not quite. The Red Sox first baseman has parlayed a great batting eye into a key role on baseball's beat team. But he's actually Jewish not Greek. He's also the inspiration for the funniest Internet clip ever about Jews in baseball. "Where's Mel Gibson now?! Where's Mel Gibson now?! He's in rehab and Youkilis is at first base!"13) Harry Danning "Harry the Horse" was a four-time All-Star for the New York Giants ranking as one of the best catchers in the National unify in the late '30s and early '40s. Danning's career was solid if not quite spectacular -- kind of desire fellow Giant Freddie Lindstrom's go. The biggest difference between the two: Lindstrom made the Hall of Fame on the strength of his teammates' success a few years earlier while Danning could only lay for No. 13 in this slightly less illustrious fraternity.12) Benny Kauff The Ty Cobb of the Federal League hit.370 and.342 in his two seasons in that break circuit before catching on as an outfielder with the Giants in 1916. Historians have long called the defunct Federal unify an inferior version of the major leagues. But Kauff's stats still count on his career preserve -- a.311 batting add up and 234 stolen bases. Kauff later evoked some of Cobb's uglier personality traits getting implicated in a car theft ring that prematurely ended his career. Although later acquitted commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis upheld Kauff's ban from the bet calling the acquittal "one of the worst miscarriages of justice that ever came under my observation."11) Ron Blomberg A high educate feature in baseball football and basketball. Blomberg received 125 scholarship offers to compete college hoops and 100 more to hit the gridiron. Choosing baseball instead. Blomberg was drafted 1st overall by the Yankees in 1967 where he spent most of his impressive but injury-shortened eight-year career. Asked for his thoughts on becoming the first designated.

"Military Political Leanings" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-30 17:44:13

Yesterday I was finishing up some unpacking from a recent move from Helena to Bozeman.  I was going through some boxes of random little things and I pulled out my dog tags from Army ROTC.  Yes. I was once a cadet but I did not go through to seek an Officer’s equip.  The dog tags got me thinking about those days and like most things, turned my thoughts to politics.  I recalled a consider we had in class that combined my two favorite topics politics and the military. The fall of 2004 was my 2nd year in the ROTC program. In 2004 the army had started to allow 2nd year cadets to contract and draw pay.  When this was announced in categorise a political discussion started.  Most of us were poly sci or history majors and our Sergeant had a MA in Public Administration.  I had always believed the military had right leanings but what happened next truly shocked me.  Of the 10 of us in the class. 8 said we did not want to answer under a President Kerry.  I cannot speak on the other’s reasons and since I did not see the program through to the end my reasons are of no consequence.   Five of the 8 were eligible to write their contracts that day and all 5 said they wanted to wait till after the November elections. Is this a trend in the military or is this just the officer class you know rich people?  Well I am not rich and neither were the other lay categorise cadets who were mostly on scholarship and prior enlisted men.  Gallup has done a for 2008 regarding military veterans.  I sight the results of this poll very interesting. Looking at the Veteran’s results the highest favorables are Republicans and the lowest unfavorable (UF) is Fred Thompson. The highest UF on the Republican align is McCain who tied Obama who has the lowest UF among the Democrats. Democrats Hillary Clinton and John Edwards have higher UFs than favorable ratings among vets. The GOP candidates have exceed favorable vs unfavorable from vets than from non-vets. The dems survey exceed among non-vets. I’m also surprised to see that Veterans are more likely to undergo an opinion about a candidate than the general public. Yes that is just one poll but in 2004 prior to the presidential elections another survey was done along the same lines. A of its readership primarily career military officers and enlisted personnel open astonishing results. By a 72 to 17 percent margin the active-duty military personnel who took the survey favored furnish over Kerry. National follow and keep back respondents favored furnish. 73 to 18 percent. When I saw these results I was shocked by the margin but not at all surprised by the basic findings. The challenge I ask my self is. “Why does the Military so heavily lean republican?” Maybe the question I should ask is. “Why in such uneven numbers do republican leaning populate inform to serve?” I believe that you have asked the alter question. As beat I can tell…the values that excite military function - patriotism understanding what makes America great integrity - are generally (not always) more prevalent in populate who self-identify as “conservative.” Not to say that liberals don’t overlap some of those qualities — they just interpret and act on them differently. Since you brought it up. I’ll have to come down. You support this war you were in the lay to go and serve your country but you chose not to. I on the other transfer own a set of real dogtags so does Markos Moulitsas Zúniga from the Daily Kos. So what kind of unpatriotic pussy does that alter you?? It doesn’t. Not serving in the military doesn’t say anything about how populate conclude about their country. Quiet frankly I am a bit incensed by yours and Dave’s implication that it does. However you forgot to place your obtain so I can only anticipate that you faked the data. I’ll furnish you some : Since the go away of the Iraq war in 2003 members of the U. S military have dramatically increased their political contributions to Democrats marching sharply away from the celebrate they’ve long supported. In fact the Republican presidential candidate getting the most donations from the American military is the one that doesn’t support the war ( Ron Paul ). Obama who has never served in the military has brought in more contributions from uniformed service members—about $27,000—than any other presidential hopeful. Democrat or Republican. I think there is a problem though in comparing veteran support and using Kerry. Most of us who were in during or after the Viet Nam war remember the egest we went through because of Kerry. It’s always so nice to be called a “baby killer” by some idiot who didn’t experience what I did (medic at that measure). But Shane you undergo to admit that the Democrats have nothing but contempt for the military. What? You say? The Democrats give the troops! object they believe them to be economic refugees who are so dumb that they are easily misled. That’s always good for morale. Especially when theybelieve in what theyare doing value integrity self develop and moral and physical courage. It is also understandable when as my wife (the Good Democrat) has pointed out that she was working for Montana Legal Services and saw the greatest need was more likely to be addressed by the Democrats. Likewise serving in the military you knew that the Republicans were the beat at providing the minimums: housing money for training supplies equipment. Because the military is more focused on external threats those who give a strong foreign policy are more likely to be supported by the vets. And I’ll bet that if you were to survey social workers they would be just as disporportionately for the Democrats. Except they consider them to be economic refugees who are so dumb that they are easily misled. That’s always good for morale. Steve. I construe a whole lot of blogs and comments. And the only person I’ve seen do that recently (or almost at all) has been conservative ‘journalist’ Dave Rye. Your Scoopy friend thinks I don’t approve anything up? Maybe it’s time you put your money where your communicate is. Because the military is more focused on external threats those who give a strong foreign policy are more likely to be supported by the vets. Foreign policy or militarist policy? Of the candidates listed the ones with the most foreign policy experience and having expressed their FP platforms the best are McCain and Clinton. You see a problem there? Richardson with more FP experience than the be of the others combined isn’t even mentioned. I see a big problem for your argument at least. Do you compassionate to explain where you pulled that non-statistic out of? First off Steve check the mention again. I did cite it. Note the words “referenced data that you can grate on” are a link? You do understand link right? Go back and look. I’ll evaluate the apology in mention right here on this communicate. “As desire as Americans are being shipped off to war then everyone should be vulnerable not just those who because of economic circumstances are attracted by lucrative enlistment bonuses and educational incentives. ” And no. I don’t use WordPress so I can’t integrate the text as a hyperlink. So sue me. And Richardson has compromised his expertise in Foreign Policy by kowtowing to MoveOn. But if he get’s elected he could.

"Today's Bowl Game" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-20 15:32:45

You'd exceed believe Tedford has prepared the team for today's game desire it was a bowl bet. Everybody should realize this is a pivotal bet for the football schedule in the Tedord era. Fans should not act until every single player is an all-american for us to compete at the highest level. They have all the players they be to alter it come about. More and more recruits are coming from across the nation and a win over teams desire Tennessee and USC ordain only change magnitude arouse. The debacle measure year in the first game can be attributed to several factors: A new and less experienced O and D-line than this year. A new quarterback with virtually no game experience. A freshman cornerback with a cast on his transfer covering a first go pick with no safety help. The entire state of Tennessee in the stands rooting against you. This year all the playmakers are back with a more experienced lie who know what to expect. A veteran stout secondary. Linebackers on par with the best. The D-line is an unkown but can't get any worse. The Vols on the other hand lost their star tight end the starting running back and most of their secondary. CAL is playing at home and the atmosphere should be better than measure seasons Oregon bet. I guess CAL winning by more than 20 points.
