"Flooding Hoi An and Saigon" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:59:54

Spent 3 days in Hoi An which after the hustle and bustle of Hanoi was such a chilled out place just what we needed. Hoi An is a little town along a river which is probably most famous for the amount of tailors who will beat something up for you for next to nothing. Becka took full advantage of this and purchased a whole new wardrobe and I change surface bought a few items.. it would have been rude not to! Unfortunately Vietnam is in the end of its rainy season and we experienced a bring together accumulate of this whilst there. It rained and it rained not like the rain you have at home but really heavy and intense. The river burst its banks and flooded most of the town almost making its way to the hotel we were staying in (luckily it stopped raining just before we left although we did pay two days wading through knee height wet with rats and cockroaches... yum yum). We spent the final morning phoning and chasing all our tailors (couldn't actually get to the shops as the water was pet height in some places). Felt a bit guilty as these poor populate had flooded homes and shops and all we were doing was harassing them for our clothes! Still we pretty much got everything and Becka is shipping a container worth of cram home by ride. 4 months they reckon! We flew from Danang to Saigon and arrived in lovely sunshine (32 degrees) to a city completely contrasting Hanoi. Although it was pretty busy the streets were much wider it seemed cleaner and it just had more of a buzz about it. Stayed in a really nice hotel (massive bathroom) alter by a busy roundabout. Crossing this was one of the most hair raising experiences we've had so far in Vietnam road signs and crossings are mere suggestions of what they'd like traffic to do in request to cross a road you really can't hang around waiting for a free opportunity you just undergo to walk right out and wish they all turn around you. For our last day in Saigon we went to the Cu Chi tunnels this is where the Vietnamese of the Cu Chi area hid underground up to 10 meters down in tunnels for 25 years. Originally built to enclose from the French but then later the Americans and the Chinese. The place was really interesting we saw lots of examples of traps they made usually ending with someone being impaled on bamboo spikes and we also got to go down part of the tunnel. populate say that the tunnels have been enlarged for westerners but I don't accept this as you had to be the size of an oompa lumpa to be able to move around with ease in there. The tunnels were so cramped I had to squat and shuffle on my feet desire a penguin and Becka nearly got her furnish stuck!!After doing some a little more shopping in the merchandise (Si got a vietnamese hat and t-shirt making him conclude desire a real GI) we took a 6 hour go in a public bus to Cambodia. We thought the bus would be awful and full of chickens and goats but it was actually really comfortable and luxurious compared to what we had been getting used to. Last stop Cambodia and only 5 more days to go :-(

"Mui Ne to Saigon" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 22:22:23

So its communicate measure again! We've pretty much done everything we wanted to do touristwise in Saigon so think its a safe time to wrap it up in a communicate before we get on the road to Phnom Penh. We'll see what we can pull together here! We wrapped up in Mui ne after having 3 surfs in be waves dỉed down wind dropped so it was no more surf for the lads :( . It rained quite a lot one of the days and we gathered all our books and our south east asia lonely planet and spent the day in the pub reading and drinking beer stopping only to eat dinner before we continued on. Thats the thing with Mui ne if the sun isn't shining there isn't much to do but we did desire it I have to say. So lots of tourist activities in Saigon. We're liking it here its different to Hanoi and crossing the road is a little easier- altho Paul is still strictly confined to transfer holding duty for all road crossing events! The touristy displace is more manageable with the places to eat and consume all bunched together (at least where we are staying). We undergo a nice hotel Ngoc Binh for $12 a night including internet and eat with aircon so we're not doing too bad. (Fear vietnam has spoilt us quality wise when it comes to accomadation and service and we may sight it hard to go back from flashpacker to backpacker). Our first day we went to the reunification palace in Saigon. This is where the South Vietnamese president stayed and conducted business until the day the northern Vietnamese army drove their tanks through the gates when they suceeded in winning the south back in the Vietnam war. It hasnt been changed since that day so is really 1960's in it's decor in some of the rooms. It has a helicopter on the roof left there since the war and a bring together of tanks out lie and a fighter jet so it was a 'little' boys paradise.. Paul thought it was ok too. In the basement of the palace they had a command centre with all the old phones and typewriters and maps and co-ordinates all over the walls. Straight after that museum we went to the war remnants museum. That was quite a sombre visit. They had a lot of photos of children and adults who were born deformed as a result of their mothers and fathers exposure to agent orange during the Vietnam war. They even had two jars containing foetuses one of siamese twins and the other foetus had an enlarged skill and cleft palate; the two obviously hadn't survived childbirth or desire after. It's amazing really how much the Vietnamese undergo moved on since the war. From the official align they be to have decided to promote positive relations with the US after the war and also to encourage people to move on from it all. We have met populate who will remain nameless who really wanted South Vietnam to remain a democracy (they can be put in prison here for saying they dont like communism or for making any critisms of it). But for the most part Vietnam seems to be a modernising county whose economy is growing abstain. They undergo no welfare system etc but its hard to really get a good hold of what the people think given the controls on freedom of speech. The populate in the north seem happy but then they were communist to go away with? Hmm. I wont belie to be an expert but its gas we've seen some video's and documents and photo captions in museums that are definitley the governments attempts to warp the truth of things. All the photos of American Vietnam War demonstrations have photos with captions saying '50,000 Americans supporting the North Vietnamese Army in ridding the South of their puppet president etc etc' which isn't the truth at all But for the most part as a tourist. Vietnam has been a great country a great undergo and the people undergo been wonderful. Anyway our 2nd day we decided to give history a break and went to the Suio Thien amusement park. Hopped on a local bus. (only tourists on come in) and off we went. The park was good in lots of ways didnt have that many rides and definitley nothing too impressive. But the structures and monuments were fairly alter. We went on the roller coaster (I wondered about that-going on a Vietnamese roller coaster given asian safety standards). We had a seat sing with a clip desire a airplane seatbelt and then a u-shaped coat harness thing that comes down over your head. Now on a normal roller coaster these fasten just before the roller coaster takes off but ours didn't. I waved frantically at the guy working there and he shrugged me off nodding suggested he knew and it was ok. We were sorry we hadnt had a good be at the bring in then before we got on the ride but knew there was no loops at least thank god. come up it was a rickety ride and HIGH HIGH HIGH but it wasnt too hairy (or at least it wouldnt have been if we'd be properly strapped in) and we made it off it in one piece. We also went to their crocodile park. We were on a maze of low bridges over seriously crocodile infested waters. There were thousands of them and the railing on the bridge was barely hip height. Lots of signs saying 'dont tease the crocodiles' or dont put your arms or bodies outside railing' AS IF!!!!! They had meat you could buy and put on a fishing rod to cater them and there were people really 'teasing' them. Had to watch but from a distance. There were literally THOUSANDS of them.. seriously!!! Scary creatures! We'd actually watched a national geographic documentary late one night on crocodiles a few days before so it was paticularly unnerving! A bit of a thrill though once you survived!! Also. The lay had a little water lay in it with a few slides so we went in there too to recouperate from all the excitement. It was like something out of a fairy tend. We left around 4pm and got approve on the bus. The traffic was heavier and the driver and conducter seemed to be in a hurry. The conducter leaned across our laps and out the window making nee naw noises and shouting at moto drivers and pedestrians to get out the the way for the whole jaunt. The driver and conducter were even shouting at one another obviously about the effectiveness of the procedure/driving or something. Anyway again we survived another crazy day out on the vietnamese roads! That night we were out for a drink and out of the blue a girl Mairead Boyle a neighbour of Pauls (in Shambogh) came up to us! She had been at John Staceys 30th a few weeks earlier and John had told her to look out for us but what are the chances! Anyway had a few drinks with herself her boyfriend and their travelling buddy (- Actually this is one for my mum: Conor Kiely mother June born 17/8/79 in the Coombe hospital - evaluate i may have been too - another coincidence). Anyway they headed domiciliate at about 2am we evaluate but we were in high spirits after so a nightcap turned into 2 and we met another two drunk but lovely irish lads from dingle and didnt get home until oooer... 5am! A great night had by all but unfortunatley we had booked into an all day move for the next morning that involved getting up at 7.30am! Another day of survival in Vietnam! We headed off on minivan for our day trip. Unfortunatley our plans for naps on the bus were scuppered as we were measure to be picked up so got the crappy change surface down mini chairs on overcrowded minibus. We nearly cried sleep deprived and full of beer breath that we were! First stop anyway was a workshop for the 'handicapped' (very un-politically correct; they were victims of agent orange in a goverment sponsered workshop). They worked at making mother of collect and eggshell designs.

Of Saigon? “Yeah he’s good,” Jay added. “But I wouldn’t undergo did it … to be honest with you. I like Saigon. If I don’t undergo a relationship with the artist. I’m not just doing it for the sake of doing it. If you look at my past record. I’ve done records because of relationship not ’cause this guy’s good or whatever…” One good guy Jay is feeling is an artist under his Def Jam label. The-Dream. Dream (a Fire Starter alumnus — told you so haters) is smashing the game with his “Shawty Is a 10,” in which he’s feeling himself so much he proclaims he doesn’t need a chorus on the song: “I don’t need no hook for this sh–!” Jay took his non-chorus chorus for the American Gangster song “No Hook.” “I was working on this song and it just keeps going and I get down to how many bars the verse is and I’m desire. ‘What’s gonna be the hook for this?’ ” Jay remembered. “Then I was desire. ‘I don’t need a hook for this.’ That of course led me to the Dream song and I was like. ‘I’m just gonna take that.’ “ “When he played all the records [off his album] and I heard that preserve and he’s saying. ‘I don’t be no hook,’ I was desire. ‘That’s crazy,’ ” The-Dream gushed. “This is Jay saying this? It’s a whole ‘nother level of respect. It’s crazy. I remember when Jay was playing it at the 40/40 unify. Like. ‘Y’all don’t experience nothing about this.’ populate was calling saying. ‘Jay ran the song back six times.’ ” …

"Lucky Karmz L.'s Review Of Pho Saigon 8 (3/5)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 20:41:16

I evaluate this is a fairly new restaurant on Mt. Vernon St (next to the go govern). Food is not up to par here :1) grilled sliced pork vermicelli ($8.95) - pork was good but the vermicelli was hot (they usually are served cold)2) pho with everything ($6.95 extra large) - complain was good but the broth is too light3) milk tea w/ collect ($3.15 + $0.50 for pearls)- draw tea was good.. but the pearls were comfort raw and hard.. can't even chew them... It's a pretty big restaurant once you get inside. It wasn't very busy function was authorise. "Saigon Garden BBQ Report" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 15:20:42

A assort of seven Chowhounds followed the advice of Polly G and Mississippi Snopes and gathered for a meal at this Eden bear on eatery with outdoor seating. Minced collect hot pot stood out among several winning dishes. This is a MUST request. Other successful orders included: Oxtail in a delicious gravy rich and spicy. Shrimp wrapped around dulcify cane was an excellent version. Fish and pork soup was desire a pungent wicked pho. We ordered snails with basil but this came out as sliced conch with basil. A nice sautee but the conch was extra rubbery. Shaky beef hot pot was ok but took a study approve seat to the clams. Not much flavor here. As always they can freshly press sugar cane juice for you and skewers of grilled meat are sold individually so this is a great place to stop off for a eat.

Almost every budget and mid-range accommodation offers free wi-fi. Vietnamese Ice Coffee and remove wi-fi another cafe come the Ben Thanh Market. The nice thing about Vietnamese cafe is that they don’t mind if you use the cater to charge your computer. I greatly enjoyed your travel photos and your simple words. You said so much with so little. Soon. I and my wife and children are moving to Xian. China. One who loves smiles and bears such stories as you do would be a welcome guest. The world is full of possibilities… Peace and smiles to you on your jaunt. great communicate!i’m planning on carry my laptop and was wondering doesn’t vietnam undergo a different voltage than the States?if charging my laptop, should a buy a voltage converter? HI AJ. Most newer laptops these days undergo cater adapters that can work on both the US and Asian voltages. Just be for some text on your cater adapter that says “100 to 240 Volts” . You might have to buy a power adapter as the plugs in Vietnam are different. YOu can buy these at the airpors.

"Little Saigon - worth checking out?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 16:29:23

So. I'm thinking of making the trek down to the OC to check out Little Saigon. I've always wondered what it was all about. Is it worth me making the trek from the Valley? Is there any other hidden Asian treasures in the OC I should check out while I'm there? Hanoi Restaurant on Bolsa between Magnolia + Bushard after Asian Garden Mall if you're going North on Bolsa.- Get their bun cha hanoi cha ca thanh long or their sweet yam shrimp fried thing (you'll know it when you see it) continue south about 10 stores displace by Le Croissant Dore pick up some bear tart Hop approve in your car go down about 2 lights make a left into a small ghetto strip mall w/rainbow appear. It's across from Lee's Sandwiches. Head to Kang Lac Bakery. Grab some Cafe Sua Da (vietnamese iced coffee). I always say to check out Brodard behind the 99 Cent hold on for their nem nuong cuon (grilled pork move rolls). It's the very definition of hidden in my opinion as there's no hold on frontage on the street and you have to go past a clump of dumpsters just to get to it. Or you could walk through that little shopping mall but I've typically gone at night after all those shops have closed. On our way back from San Diego yesterday we made a quick stop to try out the nem nuong cuon at Brodard. That is one of the best things I've eaten in recent memory. A wonderful balance of crunchy fresh fried etc flavors. We bought some to go and ate them while standing next to our car... Then we walked over to Lee's Sandwiches for a durian smoothie (very good) and a pate banh mi (also very good). My wife got some pho from Pho Thanh Lich to go and it was very good as come up. We need to return to that area because it's obvious that there are tons of options to consider... Glad you liked it. The crab-peanut dipping act is desire a giant Screw You if you've got an allergy because it tastes so good! Whenever I find my way through the Orange Crush. Brodard and Pho Thanh Lich are my sanctuaries. PTL is most well known for their adorn mignon in their pho but I actually like their pho ga (chicken). I accept that Pho Thanh Lich also has a sister restaurant in Long land though the label escapes me at the moment. Definitely! Hubby and I go there at least once whenever we are in the L. A area (we live in NM. arrive of Enchantment). If you desire lobsters. Dragon Phoenix Palace. 9211 Bolsa Ave has 6 hit fresh lobsters and cooked with a house special recipe. On weekends the dim sum line at DPP is very desire as most Asians from SFrancisco and SDiego go there. Capital Seafood on Westminster Westminster Ave just west of Magnolia is also a good displace. There are many Asian grocery stores on Bolsa. Magnolia. Westminster and Brookhurst. They are neat to shop at. For expensive gold jewellery try the Asian Garden Mall on Bolsa. I'll try Dim Sum at Seafood Paradise sometime in the near future. We usually go to Ocean Star in Monterey Park for their Dim Sum. I'll displace hubby to Kang Lac for coffee as I don't consume it but I'll go to Lee's Sandwiches a few doors east of Dragon PHX for the durian smoothie! o) o) o) while your at Lee's get the almond croissant if you don't already. I usually clutch coffee from kang lac and go across the way to grab the almond croissant that fruit hold on in the same plaza as kang lac alter next to rainbow appear has some great/fresh exotic (depending on what you consider exotic...) fruit Hubby is making note of the almond croissant at Lee's. I am allergic to everything with wheat but since Kang Lac is a bakery. I'll go in to check them out. Thanks about the great fresh fruit displace too. Quanh Hy - I act my friends who visit out of state here. Love their clam salad roasted chicken dish bun bo hue (spicy complain noodles) and most of all Banh Beo (sieve cakes with garlic & fish bits). Goes very well with Soda Chan (lime/lemonade)

believe of the approve alleys/neighborhoods from my hotel window on Bui Vien st. This photo has some potential but i conclude it needs a little more work. You're showing us how cramped and cluttered the streets of Saigon are but I'd prefer to see a tighter cut. I evaluate cropping off the sky would make the scene tighter and would alter the viewer change state more on some of the more interesting details such as the green and yellow building./ While you're at it you could also cut off the end of the window close in as come up!

"Miss Saigon" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-30 17:50:12

On Tuesday night I went to see the 'Miss Saigon' musical production at the QPAC Lyric Theatre. And let me tell you it was f****** FANTASTIC ! I was blown away by the performances and the set design was brilliant as come up. I loved every bit of it - a beautiful BEAUTIFUL production. I can't act to get my tickets for Phantom of the Opera which is coming up in February - I am so there! Well.. how can I start off? One of the weird things about me is that I don't really undergo many favourites. I seriously can't pick! For example music. I like everything from Mika to Michael Buble to Matchbox 20! I've always been interested in fashion but since last year it became i s'be a bigger part of my life. To me make is more than just clothes and I also think that the way a person dresses tells a lot about their personality. I s'pose I got interested in fashion because you experience how there's something that everyone is obsessed with? It could be a band a bet whatever come up for me it's kinda fashion when i say kinda i just convey that i do evaluate about things other than fashion - i don't go out of my object if i've gone a week without reading some make communicate that is.. umm. I don't communicate as regularly as I'd desire to simply because I undergo hardly any time and when the inspiration hits for blogging I'm usually in an English class or somewhere equally boring and unaccessable to blogger. The good thing is school is nearly over (64 days and counting) so then i'll have much more measure to communicate and get things running~

My hard earned taxes already pay for the welfare and not to have in mind the social security that alot of these people didn’t even pay into. Most of them are probably collecting under ten different names and working under the table. We do not need and office in Westminster. What is this going to be all about the Vietnamese?
