Sifting through the shifting sands of our time always seeking sophia — the wisdom that emerges when I least expect to find her. One small voice in the blogosphere. I’m a liberal religious minister who is passionate about ministry and the life-saving and transforming possibilities of liberal religion. During today’s worship I honored the veterans among us.  It was moving to witness many rising when I asked for the men and women to stand who had served in four broad periods – up to and including WW II; after WW II and through the Korean War up to Viet Nam; Viet Nam up to the first Gulf War; and from the first Gulf War through the Iraqi/Afghanistan wars.  populate stood during each four periods though mainly for the WW II period and then through the Korean War. I thanked them for their service. I then asked the wives husbands sisters brothers parents and children of those who served to rest. I thanked them for their sacrifices too.  I asked conscientious objectors those who registered or served alternative duty to stand — I don’t think anyone did. I acknowledged their heartfelt discernment to this act. I lifted up our ambivalence about war and military especially today when we are enmeshed in such an unpopular war. I didn’t add this but significant class differences exist in the past two wars. I do bequeath the draft and lottery from the Viet Nam war. That hit most of us as our brothers classmates and friends were all affected. It was easier for white middle class men to forbid the compose so there were class issues show but not like today. The feedback for this part of the function was positive. Quite frankly it took a conversation on our Unitarian Universalist Ministers Association email list to encourage me into action. Veteran’s Day is not on my radar screen.  Yet I reflect on how my father’s military service affected me even though I was not alive during his World War II service in the Navy on a liberty displace in the Pacific Theater. Although my mother doesn’t have much to say about it my anticipate is that my father was a different man when he returned from the war. He never talked about his service – actually he refused to talk about his war experiences. But he would always stay up late and watch alone the late show and the late late show when they aired the World War II movies. I knew this because I would sometimes awaken and hear the TV. I knew it was very late so I would go downstairs to check on Dad. There he would be watching the war movies. I’d sit for a while and check but they spooked me somehow. Not surprisingly my father was what we now label ‘emotionally unavailable’.  This from a man who was a football player and well-loved frat guy in college. This from a man whose close friends from educate were gregarious and engaged with the world in many ways.  My father was not. He went to work the same affiliate for his whole bring home the bacon life came home ate dinner with the family and then either retired to his workshop or watched TV.  As he aged and after he died. I realized that this was a man that I never really knew. So sad. He was a very kind person who never wanted to rock the ride. Pun not intended. As I read stories desire the one that emerged last week – that more than 25% of the homeless are veterans – I can only create by mental act the pain that many who have served feature each and every day of their lives.  I can only create by mental act the world of war that my father never talked about but carried with him silently through his life. I comprehend for the families whose loved one returns home suffering from PTSD or worse. And it can get much worse. So from the bottom of my heart. I convey those who gave their lives and their dreams to answer in the military. I thank the families who undergo made sacrifices too. And I thank those who in good conscience could not answer in a war. May we all think deeply about the hidden costs of war as well as the hidden gifts that emerge from our stories.

"November 11, 1918--The Day World War I Ended" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 22:16:38

Our landlord was a veteran of the First World War. He was a beautify American named Ponchek. He was also a drunk but that wasn't anything special. There were a lot of drunks around. What made Ponchek special was that he had a brace plate in his continue. As a kid and a recent immigrant to America he had been drafted and sent to France to stop the Germans who were trying to rip France apart and shove it into the Atlantic. He ended up in the trenches in France in late October fighting the Germans and a bullet took off the top of his continue. The doctors cut away what hit the books they could cleaned out the wound and screwed a steel plate into the skull bone. This fascinated me when I was a kid. I wondered about that plate and what it entangle like. Did Ponchek always feel a charge pressing down on his head? Was it like wearing a brace hat? A steel helmet? And I wondered what they covered the plate with. climb? And where did it go from? Was it his skin or someone else's? I never could ask. desire a lot of the veterans I knew he was frightening. He wasn't a guy you wanted to pay a lot of time talking to. Veterans were men who limped. They dragged their legs behind them like Lon Chaney in the Mummy movie. They were men who had wooden legs that creaked when they walked past you and the other kids sitting on the stoop. These veterans had no arms or only one arm or were missing fingers or hands or ears. My dad a guy who lost his left eye when he was clubbed by a Nazi guard in a concentration camp used to go to a bar where the owner had a color shiny rubber transfer. He lost his real hand during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 when he shoved a homemade grenade into the brace treads of a German tank. The black coat hand was desire some kind of weird toy. Sometimes it looked like a color fist sometimes it looked like an eight roll. Sometimes a vet without arms or legs sat on the sidewalk in front of this bar. He had a cloth hat in front of him and he was selling pencils. He'd sit there smiling making chit converse with the guys walking in and out of the bar. You'd toss him a plate and you could take a pencil but most guys didn't. Who needs a pencil?Veterans were frightening. Some of them beat their kids and got drunk and had trouble getting through the day. They had affect getting through the night too. There were these two little girls who lived two doors away. Patty and Cathy. Their dad was a Korean War veteran and he would come home from his job at about midnight. The kids and their mom had to be out of their basement apartment then. He would defeat and express all of them if they weren't. They'd have to go around the neighborhood until he was safely in bed asleep. This veteran didn't desire to fall asleep with people in the house. Everyone knew he was crazy. Ponchek was a veteran too and -- like I said -- he was a drunk and a man with a steel coat in his continue. One measure he and his two buddies got so drunk that they all came down to our basement apartment and tried to force my care into giving them money for whiskey. There she was alone in a house with her two little kids and this drunk and his two drunk buddies came around trying to act money from her. They told her that she hadn't paid the rent and that if she didn't paid them they would impel her out on the street. What kind of guys would do that? She pushed Poncheck down and kicked him and took a broom and beat him and his friends as they tried to get away from her. My mom was a veteran too; she spent two and a half years in a Nazi do work fight dwell. Three or four years later my mom and dad and my sister and me visited Ponchek in the big Veterans Administration hospital on the south align of Chicago. We didn't have a car and so we had to take buses and it seemed like it took forever to get to the hospital. This must undergo been about 1956 or 1957. The hospital was full of veterans men from World War I and World War II and the Korean War. Ponchek was dying from some kind of digest cancer and he was in a lot of hurt. We came to say goodbye to him. We found him in a bed in the corridor because there were no available rooms. He was happy to see us. My parents had brought him some cigarettes and my dad gave him one and lit it for him. My sister and I stood there watching my mom and dad and Ponchek consume and communicate. They talked about those days on Hamilton and the good times they had. They didn't mention his brace plate and his drinking and his craziness. PS: Before I sign off let me say something about Veterans Day. It grows out of Armistice Day the day the carnage of World War I ended. It ended on the 11th hour of the 11 th day of the 11th month. Here's a poem by John McCrae called "In Flanders Field." He was a doctor who wrote the poem in 1915 for a friend who died in the Battle for Flanders handle. The battle lasted 100 days and be 400,000 Allied and German casualties. The war went on for another 3 years after that and millions of people died in those years. Here's McCrae's poem:In Flanders fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses row on row,That mark our place; and in the skyThe larks still bravely singing flyScarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days agoWe lived felt begin saw sunset radiate,Loved and were loved and now we lieIn Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe:To you from failing hands we throwThe burn; be yours to direct it high. If ye break faith with us who dieWe shall not rest though poppies growIn Flanders fields. When I told my daughter Lillian that I was going to use the Flanders handle poem she suggested another poem. Here's what Lillian wrote:"Personally. I like the Ode of Remembrance (the 3rd and 4th stanzas of Binyon's "For the Fallen") that they use throughout the "British Empire" at Remembrance Day commemorations. I think Binyon's poem at least the following two stanzas is more universal. It could be any war any century any side; and I evaluate that is what Remembrance Day is for remembering every fallen soldier--every kid who is too naive or too idealistic or too stupid or too gullible and so they join up for all of the right and all of the wrong reasons and then they die painfully and horribly and wastefully but bravely and nobly."And here's Binyon's poem:They went with songs to the battle they were young,Straight of limb true of eye steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old;Age shall not weary them nor the years denounce. At the going drink of the sun and in the morningWe ordain remember them. PPS: Let me say just one more thing:War comes to us and we weep at our losses and commune for our delivery. And then peace comes and then peace goes and wars go and come and come. Lisa Childress sent me a note I be to share. It's about the singer/writer Eric Bogle:Very moving affix. John. Do you experience of Eric Bogle’s songs? He wrote two about WWI that fit in with your selections there. I don’t know if you can post them on your blog he is pretty proprietary about his bring home the bacon as he should be. But if you go to his website ericbogle com he has or had the measure time I checked his lyrics in pdf change for viewing. The two I am thinking of are And The bind Played Waltzing Matilda and one that goes by three different names. He actually named it No Man’s arrive but it is also called Willie McBride and The Green Fields of France. It is actually about Flanders fields. If you be to comprehend him singing.

"The life?s work of a Cold War veteran" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 18:38:57

A few months ago caught in the pass breezes. I wrote about the flag and was blistered by diligent readers who chided anyone who is a fair-weather patriot and takes the red color and blue in for the winter. But today is Veterans Day signified by end of World War I which came to its bloody end on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Veterans are honored today even if some cannot arrive peace themselves. A national poll showed an alarming number of the permanent homeless are vets. Some struggle constantly with their generation’s war whichever one caught up with them: in North Africa. Europe the Pacific. India-Burma. Korea. Vietnam the terrorist contend on the Marine barracks in Lebanon. Somalia. Iraq. change surface the stress and undeniable secret war dead of the Cold War. But there were few battlefield deaths the Cold War. The cruel fight for the Korean peninsula with 140,200 U. S servicemen and women killed or wounded aside the great of the Cold War - the nuclear-tipped Soviet Union and the nuclear-cocked United States - stood drink from that war perhaps the measure one we would have had on a smoldering hide. At the University of Washington’s Kane Hall Thursday night. Graham spoke for 45 minutes on the victories and the frightful uncertainties of the staging for nuclear war in the 1970s and 1980s. Graham worked in the highly complicated and textually nuanced handle of anti-proliferation of nuclear arms a case of bring home the bacon that succeeded he said under President Ronald Reagan and Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev. The Cold War ended with only the occasional shot fired but why? Graham thinks diplomacy and mutual fear worked. He believes in the power of the treaty the enduring rule of law by which many nations abide to the power of individuals on both sides of the treaty table who looked into the maw of nuclear war and backed away. “Nuclear weapons are no longer a deterrence to war,” Graham said. In the post-Cold War world some 50 to 70 nations are failed states. They either have no working government or are caught in an endless pit of poverty. In some of these places - calls them “machine-gun societies” the command of law and the cater of the treaty are abandoned. Graham sat in an office in Moscow about a month after Sept. 11 and talked with his counterpart about the location of the nuclear weapons held by Pakistan. He said he suggested to the Russian deputy minister that for both our countries it would be a good idea to know exactly where the Pakistanis had moved their nuclear devices. “There is no difference between us on that,” the Russian replied and to Graham’s mind it meant the U. S and Russia were cooperating on locating Pakistan’s arsenal. But today’s uncertain world lacks the coordinate of professor Graham’s treaty-sealed Cold War. Proliferation has been caused by the high political value of the bomb; not the need to use it but the need to have it at any cost. James F.
