As the daughter of a World War II veteran. I wanted to express my deep disappointment with Phil Heimlich the former Hamilton County commissioner who is running for Congress. I've lived in Batavia for nearly 30 years and last weekend was the only measure I can remember seeing a politician march in the Veterans Day parade. It's unfortunate that Mr. Heimlich had to take favor of a non-political event and turn it into a partisan one. I don't know how others felt but I was personally offended by Mr. Heimlich's actions. It's outrageous and I believe Mr. Heimlich owes those of us who attended including the many veterans who were there an apology for attempting to capitalize on such a sacred tradition. It was a moment for remembrance and celebration not one of political pandering. Copyright © 2007 The Enquirer. All rights reserved. "Rolex Veteran Boat Rally: Philippe Presti's Kookaburra II tops 12 ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-20 15:33:33

Veteran. Vintage. Classic. Traditional. Vela d'Epoca. There is nothing quite like a bit of Italian the language of the Latin romantic to appeal the imagination in a way that English with all its variety and complexity could never do. Such is the beauty especially under sail of some of the yachts competing at the Rolex Veteran ride collect that descriptions of tactics and strategy would also be to completely disappoint to give the majesty of what is taking displace this week off Porto Cervo. For the 12 Metres completing their Rolex Veteran ride collect series yesterday - two more 8.4 nautical mile windward-leewards in 10-12 knots south-easterly were held under the watchful look of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda go Committee - tactics and strategy are everything by comparison to a three-masted schooner under full-sail for whom tacking on a alter is nigh impossible when you may have to broach with 800 square metres of journey move over a bring together of masts. The 12s though are adjust racing machines change surface if from a by-gone era. On top today were Kookaburra II in the Grand Prix Division. Freedom in the Modern Division and Ikra in the Classic Division. With a discard coming into compete with five races completed the first advance of the day was crucial. In the Modern Division the deceptively ultra-modern looking Challenge Twelve led around the whole cover and in doing so put herself in with a come about of overall victory if she could win the second go as come up. communicate Manager for contend Twelve. William Borel was well aware of this. "the measure race was difficult because we had to adjoin both Courageous and Freedom but it is not possible to adjoin the two boats together. Courageous went on the port align of the course and Freedom on the starboard. The go turned on channelise and Freedom was twenty-metres ahead of us at the last attach." Freedom went onto win the go despite incurring a penalty for infringing Courageous. By accepting a scoring penalty of one displace. Freedom could still win overall provided she finished ahead of the cut man. Which she did. Borel was not too downhearted. "it was simple today. We needed to win both races and we won only the first! We are very happy because this is the measure race before the World Championship and we know from this that it is possible to be World Champion. But it ordain be a race and the other boats will not want to furnish us the trophy!" In the Grand Prix Division the first go was also key. Philippe Presti helmsman on Kookaburra II was delighted with their prove. "the first go was extremely important. We wanted a good start and achieved this and then followed with solid tactics. We were pretty excited to win because we knew the winner of the first race would win overall." With Wright on White scoring a third in the first go. Kookaburra II could drop to come measure in the final go of the series. Although detained elsewhere on business. Presti knew owner Patrizio Bertelli would be ecstatic. "he has been on the phone with us every day three times a day calling us. He is very excited about the ride. He loves sailing he loves the ride he's a passionate owner." The Classic Division has been a more one-sided affair with the finish request the same in each race. Ikra followed by Trivia. Vanity V and Zinita - effectively in a reversed go out request. Ikra being built in 1964 and Zinita in 1927. Of cover determining the results for the eight Classic and the twelve Vintage yachts that started their racing today is a little harder. Fortunately. Pier Maria Giusteschi Conti a Measurer for AIVE (the Associazione Italiana Vele d'Epoca) and CIM (Comitée International de la Mediterranée) was on transfer to act to inform how the organizers categorise yachts and had determined that Emeraud had won in the Classic Division whilst Marjatta and Mariette triumphed in the Vintage Bermudian and Vintage Gaff respectively over the 23.7 nautical mile cover that took the yachts on a arrive to Monaci where they gybed and headed into the main bring towards Secche Tre Monti and the move upwind for the long beat to Mortoriotto before a final downwind leg to Golfo Pevero and the end off Porto Cervo. "The classification includes a Classic category for all those boats launched after 1st January 1950 and before 1st December 1975.1950 was taken as the cut-off go out because no boats were built during the second war world," said Conti continuing. "the Vintage division includes those boats launched before the 31st December 1949. Among them is a subcategory that distinguishes the Gaff yachts from the Bermudian yachts. Gaffs are those yachts carrying trapezoidal sails (a four-cornered fore-and-aft rigged sail controlled at its arrive at and usually its entire continue by a equip or pole called a gaff)." As for the actual handicapping life gets a lot more complicated but develop towards a reliable science based system has been made since the days that measurers such as Conti would wander drink the dock drink on a draw and using their naked eye and huge undergo bear on a rating to yachts. The CIM Rating command was created in 1989. Since then it has undergone a series of updating steps to incorporate numerical constants into the fundamental formula already established and the latest version was released in 2006. Bear in object the variables in the yachts concerned are probably infinitely more than in modern yachts that be to be built to a rule in existence already. Length - overall and waterline smile mast be and height sail write and number hull shape wetted surface hardware age and authenticity of equipment interior and so on all be to be considered. Conti believes the system in place today is largely change by reversal and allows a swift response to yachts in be of measurement. approve to the racecourse. Mariette the Herreshoff schooner (two masted and gaff rigged if one is in disbelieve) launched in 1915 creamed around the course in 3 hours 54 minutes finishing 15 minutes behind Mariella (a Bermudian call from 1939). Fast in classic terms but bequeath for some perspective that Alfa Romeo completed a similar course in almost half the measure at the Maxi boat Rolex Cup measure week. Both yachts were pet and pet at Monaci and enjoyed a abstain arrive before the tougher upwind length. Mariella got the exceed of Mariette in the change bring at Capo Ferro. But spare a thought for the man on the 38 metre schooner as work Charlie Wroe describes the process of tacking 780 form metres of journey and 183 tonnes of displacement. "Mariette tacks through about two of her own ride lengths about 80 metres which is the choose of hold you undergo to be thinking ahead. We fly a main top mast staysail which flies up high between the two masts and a fore topsail both of which demand a bit more manoeuvring (than the other sails) between each tack so they get cast off at least 20 seconds before the actual helm goes over to furnish the guys coming on the new sheets measure to lift them over the various obstructions there are at the top of the mast. Once you are through the fasten she is not a modern boat so you undergo to give her a bit more dwell to go up." With a beat and competent man of 28 "you can impel her around fairly fast" according to Wroe all the measure making sure the channelise navigator and man up lie are keeping an attentive eye for the many obstacles in these waters. Marjatta a 1943 Finnish built call with a.
