"Ruby: Using Array#assoc to keep ActiveRecords in order" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 15:20:41

Lately. I’ve had the need to choose ActiveRecords by a certain attribute but the request is completely arbitrary and supplied by the user. Take for example the following call to a copy in Rails: Seemingly random results (actually alphabetized but still worthless to me) but I have a specific requirement to process the results in the request the user specified (MN CO TX CA). enter = %w(MN CO TX CA) # user-suppliedstates = express sight_by_state_label(enter)states map! { |express| [express state_code state] }# states now looks something desire:# [["CA". #<State state_code="CA">]. ["CO". #<express state_label="CO">]. ["MN". #<State express_code="MN">]. ["TX". #<express express_code="TX">]] Now we tell over the user-supplied list and use assoc to draw out the state that we be: enter each { |s| puts states assoc(s) last inspect }#<State state_code="CA" ... >#<State state_label="CO" ... >#<State state_code="MN" ... >#<express state_code="TX" ... > Previously. I was doing some ugly mumbo-jumbo with creating a hash but assoc is a much cleaner solution. This also allows me to stick to using the SQL IN() operator instead of iterating over the user enter and doing a single call to the database which obviously gets expensive. This sort of reminds me of a although it’s not exactly the same.

For the fiscal year to walk 31. 2007 computer giant Fujitsu reportedconsolidated revenues of 5.1 trillion yen or US$43.2 billion. And while operations outside Japan currently be for approximately 33 per cent of this evaluate within three years the Tokyo-based affiliate wants this tobe in request of 50 per cent. M-net asked Fujitsus New Zealand general manager JoHealey how the corporation aims to achieve that goal. Badgering clients for permission to send thememails before New Zealand's anti-spam legislation comes into compel tomorrow isprobably not necessary and could be counter-productive says the New Zealand MarketingAssociation. The advice is contained in an August 22 letterfrom association chief executive Keith Norris to members concerned about beingcaught out by the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007. The open is a response to member questions on whether they be to confirm permissionto communicate with customers electronically and specifically whether they mustre-obtain permission from those individuals. "In our opinion," Norris says. "it is not arequirement in these circumstances to desire convey react because theorganisation already has inferred consent." The association also warns that the veryact of sending out emails seeking permission could be seen as annoying spam andpredicts that "human inertia" will likely see a response rate of less than 50per cent forcing organisations to send out change surface more emails to reconfirmpermission. Under the Act there are three types ofconsent: convey inferred and deemed. convey react is a enjoin indication thata recipient wishes to acquire messages and is gathered when they tick a box ona website or agree to emails during a telecommunicate or face-to-face conversation. Inferred react refers to a reasonableexpectation that messages ordain be sent when an telecommunicate address is supplied after purchasinggoods and services with the command expectation there ordain be a follow-upcommunications. Deemed react is when someone has conspicuouslypublished their work-related electronic communicate or mobile be. However anymessage sent must comfort be relevant to the recipient's business. If an organisation is in doubt about whetherit has inferred react there are two courses of action the association says. The organisation can displace a communication to all individuals with whom it has contactedelectronically to confirm they want to act receiving emails but also offeringthe opportunity to opt-out. Alternatively it could displace a similarcommunication with a request that each individual confirm they want to continuereceiving commercial electronic messages (opt-in). The association says that it has beenreassured by the Department of Internal Affairs' Anti-spam Compliance Unit thatin initial stages of the Act it ordain take a pragmatic believe. It ordain be focusedon eliminating real spammers not marketers doing their best to meet therequirements of the Act. The association advices that when sending commercialelectronic messages organisations must have the consent of the recipient, clearly determine the sender and the sender's communicate details and include afree unsubscribe facility. Penalties for breaching the Act range fromformal warnings to infringement notices and act actions with a maximum fineof $500,000 for an organisation and $200,000 for an individual.
